Was hoping for a ride on the bike today but weather was a bit grim. So walked from Sandsend into Whitby and back, got parked and started walking about 10:00 am, feck me it was freezing and blowing an absolute hooley, only 7 deg C,...it’s nearly June ffs !! How grim does that look!..Whitby abbey on top rhs. Heavy seas around the piers Touristy shot framing the Abbey with the whale jaw bones.. View back up the river Esk I think it is ? Replica of the Endeavour, the ship that Captain Cook discovered Australia in.. The swing bridge,....errr, swinging? Always wondered about why there’s a polar bear up there, just googled it and it’s not a very nice story, has to do with the whaling ships, sometimes used to bring polar bear Cubs back to sell to circuses and fairs,..sad View from Abbey looking back towards Sandsend Whitby Abbey Back down the 199 steps... Reminds me a bit of York by the sea ! Wouldn’t fancy a nip off this fella.. Abbey from the other side Captain Cook A lot brighter on the way back Not a bad way to kill some time
Looks nice even on a bad day, when you say replica is that scaled down? Cos if that’s full size those sailors must have had trouble climbing the rigging with such huge balls. Like riding in a barrel over Niagra Falls.....
Yes DS, I think it’s something like 1/3 rd of full size, even so, can you imagine the pep talk to the crew from Captain Cook before they set off.. ” Right lads, I’ve got a hunch about finding a new continent,..it’s about 11,000 miles that way,...okay??” Nutters!!..I can remember a quote but can’t remember who it was from that said ... “ Progress is only made by unreasonable people “ ...how true!
Whitby is lovely except for the loud mouth, enormous, fat, tattooed chavs that visit there in the summer.
Today we’ve been skimming stones in Loch Lomond with the grandchildren. This evening #1 son and wife have gone away for the night in Oban so we took to kids to their favourite pizza parlour in Helensburgh, then had an ice cream on the front in the sunshine They are now watching some robot crap on TV whilst me and SWMBO are chilling with a glass of wine
Royal Navy so his crew could only listen and obey, but yes imagine that pep talk. George Bernard Shaw according to Google.
Took my own coffee, ate a bacon leek and cheese pastie, a hot cross bun with cheese and a very soggy chocolate hob nob I found in my rucksack,...could have been in there weeks !
Go for a walk around cheddar reservoir-that’ll be pleasant wake up in a Sunday morning. Quarter of a mile up the road.
Or go half a mile in the opposite direction and pay homage at Frankie Howerd’s residence. Oh no,pleease. Or pay homage at the current home of Raceys lead guitarist in the centre of town!
The current view from the Res. I don’t understand this talk of rain and weather-endless days of sunshine here leading into summer ......
The cheddar reservoir!, sounds better than the butter mountain we used to hear about imho. Would be great if it’s near the wine lake though.
