EBAY BEWARE!!!!!! Ive just found out that EBay now charge 12.3% of the final transaction fee, so if my bike sold for 5k they would take £640, the last time I sold a bike they charged 1% capped at £45, I’ve been on the phone to them and I’m assured that they are correct and they will change 12.3% with no cap!, I clarified that I’m a private seller but they were adamant that the 12.3 is correct, so I’ve ended the listing and they have agreed not to charge the insertion fee, has anyone else had this happen or similar?, unbelievable!!!
I recently sold an exhaust and was hit with that fee. I didn't realise it had gone that high, robbing twats, I'll not sell anything on there again.
Not what is says in their T&C's: This is for auctions. Final value fees When your item sells, you pay 10% of the final transaction value, including taxes and postage. We call this a final value fee. We cap final value fees so you'll never pay more than £250 for a single item. And this is for sales adverts: Fees for Classified Ad listing format You can list using our Classified Ad format in select categories. In this format the listing fee varies by category and there is no final value fee. Copied and pasted from eBay.
What really gets me is that they try to dress up their ever increasing demands for a greater share of the pie with this sort of PR twaddle. Why is the way I’m getting paid on eBay changing? We are updating the payments experience on eBay to enhance the buying and selling experience on the marketplace. We believe this is an opportunity to deliver a more seamless experience for both buyers and sellers, while offering a greater choice in payment options
Yes, also on there site it says 1% capped at £45, I queried this and was told “that must be out of date”, admittedly I’m only talking to an operative that has scripts to work to but I was told this on the chat function and on a phone call to them, how I found out was I sold some wheels for £500 at the weekend and they charged me £65, bloody ridiculous, I’ll see if I can find the chat an post a screenshot of it.
I haven’t given them my bank details because I’m sure it said that they can take any payments they want directly out of your account without your knowledge if there are any disputes.
If there was an alternative that reached such a large and international audience I'm sure lots of us, including myself, would stop using it. However, as there isn't, we need to work with it. To get them to change would take a huge Boycott of their services, try arranging that! Nobody would take a bike, car, or any other item to a dealer or auction house etc and say "sell that for me please" without ensuring they understood what cut would be taken, so surely like when buying any service it's up to the buyer to understand the costs, adjust the asking price, and make a decision to go for it or not. I'm not defending them, but where else can you get to so many people worldwide that may want your item. My view is that I could sell to a smaller audience on Gumtree, but the buyer willing to pay most won't even see my item. The whole situation is perpetuated by buyers just looking on EBAY, assuming the price is low without checking elsewhere and buying. A great example of this is plastic rear undertrays for early Monsters. Brand new from Ducati, delivered in a few days, they were £17.50 @3yrs ago last time I brought one, but used ones with broken lugs etc regularly sell on EBAY for @£25 because that's the cheapest one on EBAY at the time. I personally take advantage of the zero listing fees offers etc, always start an auction at what I actually want for an item, and add to the starting price the cost of EBAYs fees at that price. I do the same thing for Buy it Now listings. Then any bids above the starting price mean you are always better off than you would have been. I recently sold a bike on EBAY, at £3200, but because of the variable sellers fees I decided what I actually wanted for the bike and 'brought' a classified add, which was I think £19.99 for a month. There were no further fees when the bike sold. I've had some parts re-manufactured, SS series warning light decals, and have sold probably 80% overseas using the EBAY Global shipping programme, which works really well for me, although I have added a note in the listing that I deliver FOC to the global shipping hub so please don't leave me bad feedback for the cost and length of shipping time. The same item was put on here with a discount against the EBAY price, but I only sold a couple that way as believe it or not, there are plenty of Ducati owners that are not members on here. Nasher.
What they do now is send the payment for the sold item to your bank account, not your PAYPAL account, and they remove their cut before sending it so you no longer get a forgotten about invoice a month later after you've emptied your PAYPAL account buying other bike bits. They always took a PAYPAL payment for the invoice without you having to approve it, but they no longer own PAYPAL. I actually prefer the new way. Nasher.
really not sure what's going on here. says capped max £45 which is what i was charged recently for selling a car........
Aren’t they holding funds for two days too, but they expect it still tonne posted? I haven’t updated mine. And won’t be.
Yes I’m still thinking there must be some mistake, but it’s not what eBay are telling me, also they have definitely taken £65 from a £500 sale I made at the weekend, god knows what’s going on. When you say recently how long ago was that?, I sold a bike 2 years ago and paid the same £45 capped.
Weird that needs checking nobody in there right mine is going to pay 600 quid out of a 5000 vehicle sale
just checked and looks like i didn't complete the sale via ebay which is prob why they are trying to whack up price. however, agree about 13% on usual stuff - recently charged that for bike bits. but not for actual vehicles. says in black and white on the attachment above i copied from them. really can't see how they can have said that in your web chat with them. left hand right hand etc......
The rate they charge for vehicles is much lower than for parts and other items as far as I can tell. This is cut and paste from Ebay seller fees and clearly shows the final transaction fee to be between £25-£45 for private sellers:- Motors fees for private sellers The following fees are inclusive of VAT and apply when you list in the Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles category. You and me both , basically if you’ve signed up for "managed payments", eBays system that replaces PayPal, which everyone will have to sign up to eventually you’re stuffed, every operative on chat gives a different answer, so the simple answer is don’t sell on eBay auction if you don’t want to give 12.8% of the final amount to eBay, I’m not sure if the same applies for classified ads but I’ve run out of patience with them and won’t be asking!
Don’t know how to link to a BBC Business News web page but there is an article about eBay no longer using PayPal and paying sellers direct into their bank account. Never sold anything on eBay and having read the article, never going to. Andy
