I've done the dirty deed and fitted a Scottoiler on my Mutley and though I know it'll keep the chain lubricated and save me having to bother with it on my summer holiday it's left me feeling guilty about defiling that fine piece of Italian machinery with a piece of Scottish tat. I've even gone so far as to fit a Lube Tube (fnaar) so I don't need to check the level in the reservoir for the 2 weeks we're away and now all I need to worry about is if it springs a leak and spews Scottoil everywhere under the seat. It was surprisingly easy to fit taking under an hour from start to finish so now all I need to do is adjust the flow and forget it
Had one on mine for the past 2 years, 12.5k and the chain and sprockets are still going strong. get the drip feed right and it will work a treat.
The secret to chain life is lubrication....if like me you can't remember or can't be bothered to lube the chain after a good ride then a scot oiler will do the trick! Also the oil washes off much easier than chain wax! I had my oiler on my yammy for 30k and still the same chain! My mutley is now on 11k and the chain is still good!
My only concern about having a Scottoiler is that by removing those 2-3 minutes spent lubing the chain I also remove the only time I'll actually have a look at it to make sure it's in good condition. I'm a lazy bastard and my routine on holiday is load the bike, have a smoke while it warms up then get going and no matter how good my intentions are when I set off from home that chain will be ignored. They do work well though and I have to be nice because for a while I was part of their test team and got quite a few of their products free
I bought a 748SPS of all things with one on, it looked horrible and had oil all over the underside of the seat etc. but the chain was and still is in good condition they do work but I would still rather lube my own chain.
I agree, I can generally get 20k miles out of my chains by using Profi-Drylube. You have to clean the chain of grease at first application, but after that, it doesn't fling off much crud (I hate cleaning my bike). Having a Sport without centre stand is a slight nuisance, but when I tour with my one pal on his Fireblade, it is a 2 min job to do both bikes, with me pivoting the bikes onto their side stands and him spinning the wheel and spraying the chains - simples. When I tour with some other mates on GS's, they generally just sneer at me and the chain goes unattended or gets a cursory squirt where the chain is visible!
