hi all, is it me or does anyone think the side stand is too short? 1200 s multi There’s been quite a few times I’ve parked on an adverse camber and thought “this things gonna tip” I’ve had to catch it when I’ve had the top box on, probably overloaded, true. But still it seems very dodgy to me I’m thinking about welding an extra couple of inches to it, it’ll make it easier for my short legs to get it off the stand too Anyone tried this? Is there an alternative? looking fwd to replies
inspect the stand and make sure its not cracked / bent at the top. Also check its not seriously worn. Personally I don't think it is too short, but do agree if the bike is loaded with panniers or topbox the weight is up high and could tip the bike over. You just have to be more cautious about where to park, and if necessary turn it around. There are bolt on things that make the end of the stand larger to stop it sinking on soft ground. You could buy one of these and fit a thincker base plate to it.
I have a R&G stand available, I didn't like it but it does make it longer might be just what you need. As John W said make sure your stand is straight first.
That's how it is. I always make sure to park it with any camber in my favour. I'm no weak short legged midget but it can be a pain sometimes getting the bike upright.
sorry 1st image is blurry, just some dirt that will clean off. I don't want anything for it ,just postage or free pick up from Surrey. Its not a stand but an extender.
The Multistrada 950 sidestand is about 3/4 inch longer and will fit the DVT ... as long as you dont also have a centre stand fitted I bought one cos it has the extension arm thing that makes it easier to find with a foot when wearing a helmet and ya cant see. I was struggling like a dolls head at the filling station to find the damned sidestand, so I thought it worth a try. I fitted it no issue, but then found out when I flicked it up...it catches the mainstand, so I took it off again. Now I have it sitting spare if anyone wants one ? The same extension shoe fits both (cos I did that too)
so there it is @niner - you are in Spain? - the R&G "stand extender" seems to be around £37 average in the UK but not sure it justifies the price. Hahaha, oh boy, what are the pictures like with many drinks? I was just teasing, how come you didn't like the side stand puck? Personally I've never had an issue with the OEM side stand and if I've got all panniers and top box on, I'll put the bike on the centre stand. That being said, I'd like to get a plastic or metal puck for grass parking
I am very amateur at fotography even when sober. I didn't like the puck at all ,it made the bike sit too upright and if you had a bad camber it felt like it could fall over to the right. I found it hard to kick down as well.
Thanks for all the interesting replies, to sum up A. I’m no weakling midget either, thanks B. I don’t think a shoe will help it’s not like I’m parking in a field, I’m parking on road or concrete C. I do watch out for adverse cambers but sometimes, especially after 10 hour rides, I get caught out D. The fecking things too short
Yes the stand is too short but the shoe helps. Nothing to do with field parking etc. It adds a bit more to the length of the stand therefore keeping the bike a little more upright. Something like a tenner off eBay. Before I bought one I thought my bike would tip over, especially when fully loaded. Now it’s ok except on adverse camber of course. Try it before ruling it out.
I find the same problem, I’m no high tower either which makes it worse, if it’s slightly off camber lifting the bigger up off the stand can be hernia inducing! I’ve got a foot plate fitted to mine but it’s only a few mm thick, needs to be about an inch, so think I might have to make some sort of wedge to attach to it? Haven’t really seen anything on eBay that looks like it’s thick enough to make much difference. Is it just an Italian thing? A mate has the same issue with his RSVR, it would topple over if you so much as looked at it funny, he fitted a Suzuki stand to it in the end (a common mod apparently)
If you have a good local engineering workshop, they can extend it for you. For my side stand they cut it in the lower half, made up a 7.5cm insert, turning down the 2 ends on a lathe so they can go up inside the existing stand at the cut, and then welded it up. The engineer was 100% sure that the stand would fail somewhere else before his insert would.
