I can assure you they're not the same engine (I had a Bostrom myself ), they had different valves/collets also

Pretty sure base model 998 has showa up front and onlins rear. Mine does

998s deep sump had Ohlins rear showa up front! S is probably better if your looking for future value!

 

You could always wait for one of these little gems to appear for sale although they are getting harder and harder to find, here’s a little picture of my 998s Final Edition to inspire you further.

 

My 2002 base has showa forks and ohlins rear shock.

 

I'd say someone added that during it's life, unless you've had it since new. I'm fairly confident the base 998 left the factory with Showa all round.

 

My Matrix, which is pretty much a 2004 green painted base biposto, has Showa up front and Ohlins at the rear. And I can guarantee it’s stock.

 

I’ve learned with Ducati it depends on what day of the week it is and who was building it regarding what they seem to actually put on it. Have the original sales brochure and the base is shown as having an Ohlins rear shock as standard, maybe it depends on the year?

 

998: Showa Front, Öhlins rear.
998s: Showa F, Öhlins R
998s FE, bostrom, bayliss, R: Full Öhlins.

 

In my eyes there is only one, a 1997 916sps with the original graphics but 996 engine. After that your in 999r territory
