I went and looked at the yellow 900sl for sale at motorbikes4all today. I rang them on Monday to say I was coming first thing Saturday and I would ring again on Friday to check it was still available. I rang Friday and said I would be there first thing Saturday. I got a call late Friday afternoon saying the bike wouldn't start, fair enough thanks for letting me know. I half guessed it wouldn't as they like to be stated and run once a month and they've had it up for sale for a fair while. So left at 6:30 this morning 3 hrs and 198 miles to get there. It looked half decent from a distance and thought a bargain and deal could be in the offing, but closer inspection revealed that not to be. The fairing panels and tank are all good enough, some of the wheels are a bit scabby but it is 20 odd years old and I except that, but there was lots of corrosion on the frame and the headlight bracket was a right rotten mess. Rusty orange chain and discs too, the tyres had about 10psi in them too, I reckon it could have stood upright on its own.very pitted forks also Bit disappointed but you have to view these potential purchases in the flesh and I'm I did. So just over 400 odd miles and a few hours in the car talking to my dad was a pleasant enough day. There and back at an average speed of 61mph and 66mpg for less than £50 in a diesel Nissan note bargain motoring!. Unlike the bike I went to look at. Viewing the bike in that condition gave me no confidence in them getting the bike running either.
post of the month ^ a real shame after such an effort but as you said, it's the only way to find out.
Doggy, that’s a great post, somewhat surprising that the dealer doesn’t seem to have prepared the bike for sale (or perhaps they gave it a token wash ages ago hence the rust on discs and chain). What did the dealer tell you about the bikes history, as there is no MOT history on govt website, and looks like last taxed in 2006, so looks like it’s been off the road somewhere (damp). They are asking £6990 for what looks like a bike needing quite a bit of work? Did they move on price? It is the right colour though
The first game between the Bristol Bears & Harlequins all completed, and what a match as Harlequins were down and out at halftime ( 28 / zero ) but bounced back for the win.The Exeter Chiefs are in front at the minute but a nail biter.
I think the road tax ran out December 2020 and v5 last changed 2010. I get that it's a old bike and if I wanted it mint I would be prepared to have the wheels painted and bits and pieces but the frame corrosion is the thing that put me off the most. I didn't make an offer.
How far are you from Batley? Jem speed shop have a Mk 11 Superlight for just under £11k. Bonkers! (Imho)
Ok, but as an enthusiast, flat tyres, flat battery and a couple of cosmetics really gonna put you of a motorcycle icon? Surely you can see through that with enthusiasm and elbow grease?? FFS it’s it’s older than my kids.
They've had that for almost a year I think. Must be the world's most expensive SL. I'm in Kent so along way away!!
I've got lots of enthusiasm and elbow grease. Plenty of common sense too. But 7k for a non running rusty framed bike. No.
Jemspeed bike doesn't have the fully floating discs a Superlight should have & at 7k miles I wouldn't expect originals too have worn much...
