A week today I’ll be in Penzance looking forward to the early start on Monday morning . At sunrise I’ll be setting off an old Honda CBR1000f purchased for not much more than 300 quid and hoping to make it to John O’ Groats by dusk . What could possibly go wrong ? I did look for a Ducati for the trip , but couldn’t even find an engine in budget . Hopefully the big Honda is the right choice for over 1000 miles without one mile on a motorway . I’ve put on some motocross bars I had laying around so it’s a bit more comfortable and I can stand up to relieve the aching buttox as needed. It’s going to be a real endurance test . I did a shake down run this week of over 650 miles , so have some confidence that the bike will make it at least Charlie isn’t coming along, as it’s not going to be a fun trip , but she’s been on some training runs . It’s not just the long day ride , of course , I still have to get back home. The plan is either to do the NC500 on the way back , or roll the bike into the sea at JoG depending on how it goes The run is to raise funds for Cancer Research , so if anyone feels like donating , here’s the link https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/matt-and-charlies-long-way-up Matt......
Good luck, I know a few mates who've done it a few years on the trot, not sure if they're doing it again this year. Look out for a pink CBR600 it's probably one of them.
Good luck, I believe James Hillier has done this a few times on a C90, not sure he did it in 24hrs though
Nice one. A bunch of us did Jog->le in 2008. Raised £8k for breast Cancer. We set off at 3:45am from John o'Groats and arrived at 8:45 pm in Lands End. 930 miles in 17.5 hours (without the coffee stops it was 14 hours riding time) Then after a bunch of drinks one smart alec suggested why didnt we just stay up to 4am so we had been up 24 hours. The ride back home the day after (a further 300 miles) was more tiring than the ride itself to be honest. My biggest advice to you is don't be tempted to have a hot chocolate early on in the ride to warm you up. It made me real tired and was a nightmare concentrating for a while. Plan to do petrol / coffee stops on a regular basis. Oh, and you can also pick up a form to get stamped at the start, end, and along the way as proof of your trip. We did that. Allows you to be recorded as having completed it. We all got a certificate.
Thanks to everyone that sponsored me , it’s really appreciated I made it to JoG at 2am , 1041 miles no Motorways and a pretty tortuous route from Northwich to Garstang, via Holmfirth , Halifax others with traffic filled single carriageway roads I hope never to ride again Pissing down from Lands End to Cirencester , then luckily brightened up North of Preston and Scotland was a joy . The route included a ferry to Dunoon and then some fantastic roads to Fort William and onto Inverness The last leg from Inverness to JoG was tough , very cold and I really should have checked out the headlights on the Old Honda before then . Other than that she performed faultlessly On the way home now via the NC500 .. some great roads , some single lanes more like farm tracks which was a surprise. Big ride from Ullapool area to Cumbria tomorrow and home on Thursday
A lad I know off the 1000rr fireblade forum has just done this run on an old Bandit 600, he also did it for charity like you. His name is Andy, maybe you bumped into him?? Actually I've just been through our WhatsApp group thread........looks like you did, well done mate!!
I had a fridge for 10 years (CBR1000), only had to replace the light bulb. The best thing oon it was the headlight!. Anyway, well done
The bike is now for sale on eBay . If anyone fancies signing up for next years run , this would be perfect
