There is something about Ducati and Brembo that simply works where others don’t. The brakes on my 1000 were same as the RR and wooden and no where near as good as the DVT ones.
Seeing as I sold my S1000RR 2 years ago, and I've just bought a 1299, it would be a bit silly for me to come on here claiming the RR was something it isn't. I rode the gen 1 when it came out, and didn't get on with it. The gen 2 i bought was a lot better, and I reckon BMW didn't tell the whole story about how they'd updated it. The brakes were incredible, and the engine pulled a lot better from low revs. Maybe it was just a good one. I had one long play with what I think was a dark 1199. It got close out of the 2nd gear corners, but never alongside. And I was gapping it at higher speeds. Now, I'm not that bothered if someone can get past me, I've started considering the potential consequences more in the last few years.
Money. Theyre pulling mid 20's now. I cannot stretch that far. Sadly. I sell my 1299S and all its bits I might get 15, I'd still need to find another 9ish. If everything sells quickly. Shame as I'd keep it forever and ride it like Ricky does his. I could sell my 916 but thats a forever bike, Ive had it for 20yrs. Its only a Bip but I have too many fond memories attached to it. First Ive got to OEM my 1299S...
The basic 1098R’s (as in not TB’s) currently being advertised are, as you say, priced at anything between £20k to £25k but the only 1098R I know that has actually sold recently, dropped in price to £16500. IMO, irrespective of how much people acquired there bike for and now want to sell, this is about where the current market is for a standard 1098R for riding. Andy
I plan on getting some riding in this 'summer' and then OEM and sell 1299S. I missed 18mths of riding so I need my fix. I'm an awfully grumpy bastard if I dont get a blat on a bike now and again. I should have bought the 1098R when I bought the 1299S instead, but the money burnt a hole in my pocket, mates egged me on etc, so I bought a Pani against my better judgement. TBF its a great bike, but Ive not developed a fondness for it like I had for the 1198. I loved the bottom end on that.
Anyone can be quick in a straight line. Thats boring. Being fast in, fast round and fast out, thats where the grins are for me. Top speed is yawn....
If it’s straight line speed you crave, get on a train. Seriously though tbf, there isn’t much in it. My 1098R definitely had the measure of any S1000RR’s in a point to point blat on track. Dunno about the gen 4, never encountered one but the gen 1, 2 and 3 were no problem. Even that massive straight at Almeria. Followed loads along there and never got gapped. I had instructors follow me on bimmers and even they said my straight line speed was mental. Did you not fancy a V4? They’re a fast bike. Very hard charger…
If I wanted straight line speed, I wouldn't have bought the 1299. A pre reg 2020 GSX-R1000R would have saved me a packet. I don't know about track days, never been on one. But I have done over 40k on 2 and 4 wheels on an 80 mile loop of the B660. So I reckon I know my way on that road. Put me on a road I don't know and I'd be rubbish no doubt.
You misunderstood Paul, it wasnt a brag it was a matter of fact. The 1198 will nail you on corner exit and i will be braking deep into the next corner before you get going. I was talking about the alps if you recall. Especially the Juras, which the 11 showed a clean set of heals to sthou. On a straight, I agree the sthou once it winds up will pass me, and he has on numerous occassions on the dual carraigeway just before CERN. But curly followed by curly after another and you wont get near me. My M4 monoblocs mean I brake later and harder, the torque means i leap out of the corner and into the next. Its just the basic dynamic differences between the bikes. On a fast road, the sthou wins. Shove some curlies in there with steep exits and place those curlies close together and the 11 wins. Its horse for courses. Im an average rider, so its not bragging. Just the differences Ive discerned between the bikes. On the road, the 1198 has its power lower where you can use it easier. The sthou has it higher when you are in lunacy. My mate on his 600 gsxr was closer because he can keep it wound up in its power easier. So this was better than the sthou too.
Either way….rider makes the difference more than bike in most of these ‘I left him for dead’ comments. I’ve left -plenty of sports bikes of any size on a multi, and been left by guys on much smaller capacity. It’s the pilot that counts… Get the gearing sorted, get suspenders set for you, ride it like god is a person friend
I'm still chuckling about your 1098 Almeria claim. Was that before or after the engine went bang the first time?
