Each to their own but I've just sold my 1098S and when I was buying it I thought I'll keep it forever, it was my dream bike etc... In my opinion it had too much power for road riding. Sure, overtaking was fun and having all this power was fun but at some point I thought - what's the point of having this bike if I rarely go above 3rd gear? And if I do I risk losing my licence... I can see myself buying another Ducati sports bike in the future but it will either be 848 Evo or something from 916 era... or MV F4 750 :smile:
11k for a 1198s not far of 2nd hand Panigale prices - you sure you wont want to try that while you at it to be absolutely sure with all the toys so you wont need to hanker after DTC, EBC, DQS etc etc
Fuck it.......go for the Panigale R that way you'll never hanker for the next best thing. Until they bring out the next best thing of course :wink:
Kind of agree with Iceman. When I bought my last new bike in 2007 I could've got a litre bike for the same ballpark price as my 750, and I chose not to. I'd rather be able to use it and feel like I'm at least close to giving it a workout than have something with massive potential that I never even get close to using. This is why I went for an 848 when I changed my bike this year too. I could've got a recent, hardly used 1198S for the same money but I knew I didn't want that much power. 848 is plenty quick and I love it... But at the end of the day I love that litre bikes and the like are out there. If you want more power, eh, more power to ya! But I can't ever think anyone can genuinely say "I need more power" when you're talking about something with 100bhp plus. In my view it's just what people prefer. If they want 160bhp and 100lbs of torque, then do it. Andy
My view is, at the end of the day, they are all toys, so buy whichever toy makes you the happiest. You don't "need" anything - there are just things you'd like to have. I can appreciate that it gives the owner a warm feeling to every once in a blue moon explore what giving 180 bhp its head feels like, and more often, a warm feeling knowing that you could if you wanted to (or wouldn't get locked up for doing so). The only thing I loathe is people who pootle through corners (because they have no idea) and hammer down the straights. But even this, in the final analysis, is none of my business. If it's making them happy, why not? It's not affecting me much. And if you frighten yourself - or enjoy frightening yourself - that's OK too, so long as you don't end up in A&E, or planted into another road user, or in a wooden box.
I wouldn't mind a go on a 848, just so I can say I've ridden it, then I might be able to judge the difference
Sure we can arrange that Wantz...slipper essential for me in that if it didnt have one, now I have one, I'd fit one. Can I ride without? Of course, I'm not a total twat (opinions reserved) but it makes it easier and better to ride how I want to ride. Therefore, essential. Dictionary pedants need not apply
If you are after a 1198s with full termi I have just put mine up for sale. Yes they are awesome and the grunt difference from a 848 to 1198 will be night and day. You don't need any more bike than this for the road or the track.
I dunno...I was charting with a guy who has a 1098R with some superstock tweaks and a bit more, 195 rear wheel, who says he still gets blown by the beemers and kwackers when racing...and he was doing 1'34's round Anglesey full circuit so no slouch...some will always want more tbh beginning to think I want more than my 848 now I'm learning to brake and square corners a bit more on track. Maybe time to go try a big-boy bike..
It would take a very good rider to say they need more. If someone is a good rider / racer they can be down on some power to still embarrass a medium rider. Kwaks and BMW's appear to be what everyone wants for track.
Tbh a good rider on a much lower powered bike like an 848 would embarrass the big litre bikes ridden by most
Owning a litre+ sportsbike is something everyone should do at least once in their riding career. Its not a case of needing but more a case of wanting. I personally wouldn't want to go there again as i think more fun can be had on a bike you can push harder but i'm glad i have tried it.
Was that Andy Goddard? has Bullet on the screen of his 1098R? If so he's a CSS coach and can really ride that beastie
yeah its a beast, an absolutely stunning machine. the thing is, as torquey as the 1x98 are the bmws and kwacks are runing over 200bhp with a few tweaks and they are stupidly easy to ride fast, they just clear off on the straights.
A mate chopped his 1098R in because it was such a handful and he couldnt nail it anywhere. He's no slouch, mid/high 30's around A'sey and prefers his custom built 996R Chatting to a guy with a S1000RR and he feels like a god when he rides it, does everything for him, less finess and skill needed by his own admission. Much better than the other jap rockets he's had
