running in new piston rings

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Jacques_wood, Jun 25, 2013.

  1. Got some new rings on my 600ss, does anyone have any run-in tips to bed them in? I didn't know if the nikasil lining made a difference to normal bedding in procedures?

    any help appreciated.

  2. Are the rings chrome by any chance? If so be careful with running it in...........keep the revs below 4000 and vary it a lot without being too handy on the throttle.......chrome rings and nikasil are good if run in without too much hard work..........very high friction initially....

  3. Ride it like you stole it...

Well not quite but don't baby it.

You need plenty of cylinder pressure to seat the rings, hard acceleration followed by hard engine braking.:upyeah:

  4. Arquebus, they're standard Ducati rings from a Ducati dealer, box doesn't seem to have any indication to their specific material, all three rings replaced on each cylinder, there's a shine to them, but i wouldn't go as fars as to call it 'Chrome'.

How long would you recommend a run in period to last? should I lean off/or increase the fuel mixture to get it running hotter/colder etc? It's a 600SS carby BTW

  5. Did the dealer you bought the rings from not give you any advice?

BTW what mileage had the engine done when it needed new rings?

  6. To be honest, I didn't ask for any, it wasn't until later that I pondered if the nikasil coating made any difference to the run in procedure. the engine only has 16,000 on the clock, I replaced the rings for the sake of replacing them.

  7. If they are chrome rings, he runs a bloody good chance of seizing it up if he does that......in fact, I will bet on it, it will seize.

  8. Never seen a 600 piston ring but unless 600s are different to 900/ST2/916 etc. then they're not chrome.

I wouldn't have thought they needed replacing at 16k though? I replaced my 916 rings at around 40k, only the oil rings were actually out of tolerance and even they may have been OK once the barrels were replated?

I replaced them along with a re-Nikasil of the barrels and new valve guides & seals as it was using a lot of oil (1L per 1000 miles). Since replacement and running-in as above it runs per hasn't needed any oil and runs perfectly.

  9. plenty of welly, up and down the box no prolonged runs at constant revs. a couple of hours and your done.

  10. That's my thoughts if the rings aren't chrome, although I wouldn't go to high revs immediately.
