  1. This may have be discussed previously but I'm relatively new on here.

Tom Tom or Garmin and why.

Yours thoughts and views would be welcome.

  2. Garmin, because it came with the bike.

I have always used TomTom previously and I would not have looked anywhere else except for the fact that the Multi came with a DP GPS, a Garmin 220 so it was forced upon me but I have become a fan. You can create routes with the Garmin software on your PC (BaseCamp), or download files from internet (.GPX files), and then load them on to the GPS, and vice versa you can transfer where you have been (the track log) and load it on to PC and send to others. I don't think you can do this with TomTom.
I think the graphics look better on a TomTom however.

  3. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz there's probably a forum for satnavs...................try there

  4. I am we'll aware that Sat Nav specific sites exist Supervee, but as a Ducati owner on a Ducati forum I thought I would get the views of fellow Multistrada or Ducati owners. If you don't have any other constructive comments then please feel free to jog on.

  5. I just wanted to throw a quick which tyre question in here to complete the excitement. Whoop whoop!!

Which tyres are best for my bike. Round ones or those other round ones with a different tread.

  6. I prefer black ones, but mostly just get on and ride !

  7. I've just fitted Michelin PR3s for an estimated 2,500-mile jaunt round Europe starting tomorrow. At 3,000 miles the original Scorpions were pretty much shot. PR3s have always served me well and as a dual compound tyre they are well suited to touring mileages, but I will post my experiences.

A word of warning - many tyre fitters won't have the special multi-point 55mm diameter socket needed to remove the rear wheel. So don't leave it too late to source your tyres or the tool or you'll end up paying high prices at a main dealer because none of them will lend you one - even if, like me, you offer to leave a £500 deposit!

A lot of my mates who run GSs, Guzzis and Fireblades also rate Michelins.

  8. Always found tomtom systems easy to use, compared with garmin ones, I always use tyre programme to plan routes this can be set for either format, much more user friendly than base camp , in my opinion.

I also am nota lover of bike systems, have always used a car tomtom, more features, bigger screen

  9. Garmin 660 for me & just coz it was said to be the best bike specific Sat Nav:wink:

  10. Garmin; because TomTom is inferior.

PR3s; because Scorpions are as much use as iron rims.

Red MTS because red is fastest.

  11. I love my garmin 660, pity it keeps crashing and has been exchanged 3 x times. Other than that its the best, I am worried that if I switch to Tom Tom they will be shit as well.

  12. Using the 660 myself with Lifetime updates.

Try the 350LM, its pretty much the same but with faster processor and more internal memory. Can't play mp3s nor accomodate microsd like the 660. Would have been a problem a few years ago, but these days, one could use their smartphones anyway.

O, the 660 lets you add a custom startup splashscreen (see mtsinfo).

I think Garmin is the dominant one for m/cs because I think they started the whole bandwagon. The first Tom Tom Rider wasn't even weather proof if I recall!

Most riders I know use Garmin. I think at present, features are probably quite similiar. But there is a bigger Garmin community there with routes etc.

Basecamp is a pig, but Tyre is a freeware which you can upload to either devices.

I personally use MapSource which is miles better than Basecamp (but no longer supported by Garmin). I use a legacy program to download updated maps offline for MapSource and plan my routes with that. PM me if you want to know more.

  13. How about using the search function and reading the 1'000's of other Satnav threads

  14. Which are only as good as the latest reply which could be 3 generations ago ;-)

  15. Bit of a mixed message there................

"I love my garmin" - except it doesn't work.......and "Tom Tom will be shit as well" - as well as your Garmin being shit????....LOL

  16. AA maps are brilliant. £2.99 new every year.

  17. Shame you need one of these to fix it
