My ST4s 1098 (with other mods)

  1. Hello, I had some machine work done to the crankcases, then had some bushes made with needle bearing inside them. My rearsets do not have rubber bushes anymore, they are solid mounted to the cases with some more machined spacers. Where they fit over the end of the spindle, i also had, yet again, more bushes made with needle bearings in! It would have been much easier with a hypermotard swingarm but i already had this swingarm fitted to my 996 motor!
    Hope that made sense.

  2. How did you go geting the motor from the states?
    Get bummed for the vat?

  3. Sorry let me correct that. The motor was from the states, but i bought it from a guy from Leyburn. £1800 for motor, airbox/throttle bodies, manifolds, Full loom and regulator etc... a bargain at the time!
    Oh and nice avatar:upyeah:

  4. Good price for that lot! My motor alone was over 2k.

  5. Hi Bullitbill
Its not the amount of power per se, i have no doubt the 1098 is faster everywhere.
But i have owned a 998s as well and as fast as it was i just like the delivery of the long stroke 996 engine.

Not ridden a 1098/1198 yet though.

  6. Each to their own. My mate's the same about his 996. Having experienced both, in this chassis, there's no way I'd want my old motor back. If you do get the opportunity have a go on one, the pulling power is immense!

  7. I was looking at fitting bearings into the 999 engine I've put into a Monster S4.

However, I decided to use the black 999R swingarm (which has the bearings in). So welded out-rigger supports to the frame, as per the 998/999 etc. I also had to move the shock mounting position on the frame over, to align with the 999 s/a.

I bet your sa. spindle takes some abuse, as they are of a smaller diameter on the S4R, than the 1098 ones.

  8. Desmoboy , there ain't no substitute for cubes , 1098/1198 jumps like a 996 (but more so ), then kicks like a 998 .... Best of both worlds with out the rocker arm wear !

  9. Suspenders are off the bike now, off to get a long overdue re/spring, revalve overhaul. New boots also when that lot comes back. Should feel like a different bike again when it's set up:upyeah:

  10. Finally had a go on my bike with the reworked suspension. Wow, what a difference! No bucking, wallowing or sitting up in corners, very controlled and SAFE and that's with my old tyres still on.
Don't be satisfied with your stock setup, you DO need the correct springs to suit you.
The bike is now superb and can only get better with new rubber.
    Bring on some dry days.

  11. Like it, well done. :upyeah:

  12. I've already posted in the tyre section, but thought this may be useful to the ST fraternity. I've fitted a set of Bridgestone T30. Superb tyres. Stable at speed, no tracking on rough surfaces or overbanding. Done over 1500miles on them now on unfamiliar roads and are very pleased with them. Got over 7000miles out of my bt023s, so expecting the same from these. Would highly recommend them.

  13. Aarrrggghh....snapped the chain! Hole in the outer casing, luckily not touched the crank cases. Hole in the hugger, smashed indicator, took out chain guard, loads of marks on the swingarm and destroyed the carbon exhaust.......but could have been worse. Although it does give me an excuse to fiddle around again.

  14. Bad news about the chain, sounds like everything is fixable, and the main thing is no injuries etc.

  15. Glad you're ok. Was it due to the suspension adjustments?

  16. You could say it was, indirectly, due to the fact it now inspires so much confidence!
But really all my fault, riding like an idiot. Too aggressive with the throttle. I don't want to sound like a hero, but I was lifting the front over crests in the road. Accelerating hard, 3rd gear, shift lights just coming on the dash, popped it into 4th right on top of another rise, bike must have been very light at this point, wheel skipped a little.......bang. Now coasting to a halt with alot of swearing going on!

  18. Nice work mate........I was behind you at a set of traffic lights in Preston a few weeks ago and it had me baffled........!

  19. Does confuse a few folk as to what "model" it is! Was probably the day i snapped the chain on my long way home.
If we meet again, give us a nod/wave and i'll return the gesture:upyeah:
