I picked this up the other day to knock about in. I like the light up digital for early am starts. Solar means no new batteries ever, no servicing, & its lightweight. I don't fly in helicopters so this guys association did not affect my decision.
Slightly macabre, but you can't really argue with it. Dad died in a car crash 9 1/2 years ago. I got his watch - which he must have been wearing at the time. Self-winding. Still works perfectly! Take it off overnight and so long as you put it on in the morning it keeps running and accurate. Leave it off a full day and it gains - which is actually bloody useful, really given better to be early than late. With each year that passes I'm a little more astonished by it. I don't believe it was particularly expensive.
Seiko watches may not be expensive but they are reliable. I inherited my father in law's Seiko 38 years ago and have worn it every day since.
Given your history I'd stick to what you know. Otherwise you might easily be smashing £4K to £12K against the wall the next time you don't get it serviced!
You’re mad. I have a Sea Dweller. Bought it years ago ~1994… it was shite at time keeping when I got it, gained about a minute a week. I told the dealer this when I sent it off for its 1st service. It’s been impressively accurate ever since, right up to this day. And it’s had some right wallops.
Both my Rolex and Omega gain and lose time, but not by much, my pace of life isn’t down to the second Top quality watches I intend to pass on to my kids, in good time! Pardon the pun.
Too late - collect this Omega on Monday. "One who cannot cast away a treasure at will is in fetters" - Tolkien. I really believe that. If something is doing your head in like that it has to go for the sake of sanity - metal and plastic in the bin otherwise it will do your nut. A watch is supposed to be able to tell the time - that is the whole point of it. Also it was embarrassing - and expensive Rolex that was always wrong - it could be 30 minutes out - a £5 Casio was more accurate. That is not on - not acceptable. A Rolex that could not even get within 30 minutes of the correct time on any day. And how much was it going to cost to service it in London ? take it to Knightsbridge and have my butler collect it ? Now this Omega looks promising. People wear them as a daily watch. A work mate has one that was given to him as an engagement/wedding present by his now wife. The mechanism (calibre ? ) is automatic mechanical Chronometer, so it should be a good time keeper - we shall see. Hopefully will not need to be upgrade to anything more expensive. This should be prestige enough for me. Anyway, bargain (no VAT here) £3,709 - no holidays this year or last - now the small matter of selling that Seiko.....
Nice Omega. Don’t quite buy your logic mind. So if you bought a Ferrari and it broke down, would you brick a window and torch it??
A Ferrari that occasionally breaks down is not the same as a Ferrari that ALWAYS breaks down every time it is taken out. Lots of expensive cars, including Ferraris, were left behind by their owners at Dubai airport during the financial crisis. That is what I mean about casting away a treasure at will ......
Its a very nice Omega that you have there. I have an Omega too -which keeps great time- but I have had it serviced once in the last 30 years I've owned it. I guess your Butler won't mind the trip to Knightsbridge as long as it doesn't become a regular thing? I bought a new strap for it which i really must get around to putting on. Complete rip off -£170 for a bit of leather that looks very like the ones that cost a tenner, but the fitment is different so...
I can understand the discarding of the Rolex in a act of rage against a time piece that doesn’t keep time, your treasure to discard at will. Those high end cars were financed and the’owners’ unable to pay the instalments fled Dubai as the punishment as I recollect was prison not their ‘treasure’to discard.
