Help needed....

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Briggers, Jun 29, 2013.

  1. I'm currently on holiday in France on my Multi and the key has either run out of battery, or broken. Either way, the bike doesn't recognise it and allow me to turn the bike on.

Luckily, before I came away I made sure I found out the previous owners PIN code and changed to one I'd remember - and this allows me to start the bike.

My question is - once I start the bike using the PIN is there a limited time the bike runs for before looking for the key again, or am I good for the next three days riding before I get home and can get to the bottom of the issue?

    Thanks

    Steve

  2. The bike will run until you switch it of, then you will need to enter the pin again to start up. AFAIK you can repeat this for ever.

BTW You can still use the key in passive mode when the battery goes flat.
If it is a flat battery, then the replacement is a 3V CR2032 lithium iron battery which is not hard to find.

    Hope that helps

  3. Think Char was doing this and she just left it turned on and guarded it while she sent others to get the coffee ;-) seems to last lomg as ignition on as said above

  4. Oi I resemble that remark - I'm sure it was Martin's fault anyway whatever it was

Fixed now by the power of thought

  5. and for some useful advice - it kept resetting and I had to keep putting the number in again - took it to MR and they reset it

  6. Great - thanks for all your comments. I should be ok. Thank goodness I made a point of sorting my PIN out before coming away!

Hopefully it is just the battery - I'll get it sorted out when I get home.

Sun is out in France, so all is good here!

  7. If you have the key, and it's just a flat battery, then use it "passive mode" so you don't need to use pin.

  8. What is passive mode? How does it work? As far as I know there isn't anywhere to insert the key - or is there?

  9. My battery started to fail when I was in France earlier in the year, the bike warns you that the battery is getting low.

  10. You have to hold the key very close to the antenna, which the manual says is behind the lower screen mount bolt. When I've tried to use the passive key, I found it best to hold the key below/behind the instrument display.

You can also use the passive key, and I assume the active key in passive mode, to turn on the steering lock - just hold the key near the antenna when you press the red switch to activate the lock.

  11. Thanks. I assume that when you start the bike in passive mode it doesn't then check for the key and you can ride forever like it?

  12. correct.
You need the key to turn the ignition on, and also to activate the steering lock. Once on, it stays on until you switch off. Passive is same as Active except the key needs to be much closer to the sensor which is around the headlight, normally the key works up to a few metres, but when passive, the range is a few inches.
Like Steve B, I put the key behind the instrument panel and push the starter switch down and it springs to life. Much easier than using pin.
