This is what happens when Laura Kuenssberg takes her eye off the ball and runs out of Brexit stuff to report for 24hrs, left the door open to someone else to sneak in with some scaremongering doom and gloom?
I don’t get it, panic buying could only be a short lived thing assuming no one is stock piling fuel, the supply line has to level up Once your tank is full that’s it, it’s full I could understand it if we as a nation suddenly decided to drive many more miles than we do or have five cars per household, that would add up. The government’s stance of we have plenty of fuel might be right but it’s at at the refineries, it’s not where we the public buy it, so in fact we don’t have plenty of fuel Politicians blaming the public for panic buying and people on social media calling those who queue idiots isn’t helping, this problem should have been predicted ages ago If the government wants to make it difficult for foreign workers to work here this is what we can expect, it’s their responsibility and it’s their short sightedness that has got us where we are now. But as it’s been said before ‘It’ll get worst before it gets better’
Ordinarily millions of vehicles are trundling up and down Britain with say, half a tank of fuel, 50%. Cue Sky News with scaremongering stories about a fuel shortage, and every nobber wants a full tank, brimming to 100%. Can you imagine how many million litres that would be?? 36 hours of panic buying ensues and the garages are wiped out of stock. Simple.
One of my colleagues managed to get fuel today, could only get £35 worth as limit at the garage but the guy in front of him bought £15.91 so clearly just topping up, if people carry on to do this the stations will never catch up, no matter how many tankers and drivers they have on the road? unfortunately this attitude of those who don’t need it means that those who do also have to “top up” at every opportunity and so it continues…….
This morning on R4 Today program, the guy who handled the last fuel shortage (2000?) was interviewed. He echoed your view and said clearly that the government needs to make some kind of TV appeal to said "nobbers" to resolve this wankerism. According to him & modelling, if the public stop bleating and return to the usual refuelling habits, resetting the petrol stations countrywide would take three weeks. Unsurprisingly he said that 150 extra army driven tankers won't scratch the surface.
What's Fauci got to do with it? Qualified individual with something to say....unlike Captain Boris Elsewhere.
The problem with that approach is that the Govt has proved itself to be so corrupt and inept that even its own supposed supporters have absolutely zero trust in it. Hence, as soon as BoJo or one of his lackeys announce that there’s enough fuel to go around, most people will assume exactly the opposite and start queuing at the pumps
Our local station had plenty of petrol earlier. Only a small queue. I didn’t need any, so just poured £30 worth on the forecourt floor for a laugh.
Another issue that springs to mind that is causing interminable issues are "agencies". They pay say £15/hr and charge the client twice or more for it; feckin' madness! This of course is perpetuated by employers trying to body swerve their responsibility to both their shareholders and their employees. Either by design or just out of sheer laziness and incompetence they are nothing more than corporate parasites sucking the life blood of industry and should be curtailed. I would lump any kind of agency be it nurses, drivers or whatever in the same deep pit as "consultants" and "HR". Three absolutely bloody useless groups of people that have inveigled themselves into the working fabric of modern UK PLC, they contribute SFA and drain money directly out of the pockets of the workers and businesses they claim to promote. We require a bonfire of the agencies and when they are good and lit pile on the HR bods who deserve to roast slowly for their feckless, muddling and indolent ways.
I drove to Manchester and back today from near Nottingham, about 200 mile round trip, felt really naughty being so ostentatious Could do with a top up though if anyone has any to trade for some wotsits, petrol ideally
Up in Edinburgh for a few days on tour in the little funny car, did 311 miles on the way up on Saturday and a bit of running around visiting St Andrew’s etc, needed some juice today so just popped into a local Asda we were passing,…unattended pumps, credit card in , maximum of £30 worth per car, bosh….in and out in about 5 minutes, no panic up here, easy.. I only need about 4 gallons to get back home so that’ll do me nicely thank you
I think everybody's frustrated these days with politics NOT working as they should, so get yourself a big red bus with a slogan and some fancy sound bites & i'll vote for you next time out at the races.
I didn't want to jump on this panic buy wagon hopping it will sort itself out in couple of days. (This is how I ended up using A4 paper instead of toilet rolls for couple of days last year ) However quite low on diesel...with a 480miles round trip planned in the weekend, I had to pull my finger out ...today. 2 Shell stations closed. 1 Texaco closed. Found a Harvest station 3 miles away that had diesel. (was out of petrol) Bexleyheath area...
I've got to drive home tomorrow after a week at work back to Norfolk from Blackpool. Approx 278 miles. Got 59 miles range left so since every station within 20 miles is out of fuel, I'm hedging my bets that the motorway service stations might be a better option than burning into my reserves now and risk going on a wild goose chase. I'm aiming for the Shell garage on the M6 near Wigan which is 35 miles from here, so hoping they have some fuel. If not I'll have about 20 odd miles left to find some. Failing that I'll have to leave the car somewhere and get a train/s home which is around a 5 1/2 hour marathon and four changes, not that they'll be any connections tomorrow night when I finish work anyway. Ho hum.
