  1. Even the BBC couldn't make this up. Surely?

  3. I bet they could and would, IMO nonsense.

  4. Love how govt are being criticised for doing what they can to encourage people to make a few quid by using and old skill. Just like they did with doctors and nurses 18m ago.
Some will land, some don’t. If you don’t like the letter or but interested just bin the letter

  5. It would appear the press and certain elements of the population will damn them if they do and damn them if they don’t.

Most of the driver shortages are down to the industry itself treating their workforce like chite and a lack of facilities for LGV drivers who need overnight stops. You can’t directly blame the current government for all of the failings, it’s just being spun that way by the media to generate a story.

  8. The Government said 300 fuel drivers will be able to come to the UK from overseas “immediately” under a bespoke temporary visa which will last until March, and that 4,700 other visas intended for foreign food haulage drivers will be extended beyond the initially announced three months and will last from late October to the end of February.

It’ll be overseas workers back in the NHS and building sites next, heavens we might even see them picking our fruits again.

    You couldn’t make this up!

  9. My Mrs packed up a "much better job" years ago, and went to work for Tesco because it was on our doorstep, and she could pick her hours around school times. Snobs can look down their noses at the likes of Tesco as much as they like, but they'd soon start crying if the shelves were empty.

  11. I think you misunderstood, I got the letter. I'm not considering to drive a truck. I couldn't afford the paycut.

  12. Still think you’re a good man!

  13. Still missing the point tho, aren’t you. We have shortages so go looking for resources to fill them. That U.K. PLC demand and choice.

  15. The difference is that within the EU a job in the UK might have been attractive to nurses or driver's or whatever. Outside of it, a job in a different country limited for 6 months or even a year and then it's good bye again. Doesn't seem so good, does it? Especially when other, non hostile counties have the same needs.

  16. I have a dormant full HGV. I have received no letter inviting me back to save the country. However, as mentioned above there are many over riding reasons that I am not (currently) interested...

In saying that, if they were to start dishing out full ADR & CPC training vouchers for free I might consider it as I am not about to fork out several thousand quid to do it myself; oh and pay me £30/hr. Supply and demand init!?

  17. What’s hostile about U.K.? The most accepting. Ultimate cultural society by far in Europe. Again some seem to confuse choice with xenophobia: which is most prevalent in France and `Germany in all European countries

  18. Five minutes in the queue at my local Esso. Had a chat with the manager on the till, he said they’re getting regular deliveries, and that things will be back to normal in about a week or so.

  19. I'm sorry, was it the UK that took in 1 million undocumented refugees in 2015, with people clapping for every train that arrived? Oh no.....that was the Germans. The UK's official policy is to push small boats with refugees back over the dividing line in the sea. Anyway that's nothing to do with the issues this thread is for so I won't go down this line any further.
