Are Macs past their best??

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by funkyrimpler, Jun 20, 2013.

  1. Ask Mac, he knows how to use computers. Years of pissing with them aparently.

  2. Get a better faster internet deal.

  3. Speaking as a consumer and not as a computer nerd, I use a MacBook Air as a home Pc because it looks and feels superb, it is seamless to use and after two years it's still fast and I dont feel any need to upgrade it.

My kids jump straight on it and I don't have to worry about them fu*king it up.

They are expensive but the other advantage with Apple stuff is that it has a good secondhand value if you do want to trade up.

  4. Expensive sheckspensive.

The things all cost peanuts compared to what they used to.

Don't see many people complain about the price of a Termi system - a couple of bits of carbon tube.

I can't believe that nowadays you can get a colour laser printer and scanner for a couple of hundred quid.

Compared to the technology that is in all this stuff, it's dirt cheap.

  6. I have an iMac 20" from 2008 that is as good as they day I bought it, an iPad and an iPhone. They all link together seamlessly so it's easy to transfer photographs between them, etc. Above all else, they work. I have a Microsoft powered laptop for work and it reminds me of the day when I owned one personally. They are as slow as hell and become slower with age (just like me), I get the famous blue screen, the egg timer, the three week wait for it to power up, it constantly crashes and last but not least "program not responding" message.

Apple may not be perfect and maybe overhyped but would I go back to Microsoft powered machines, nah.

  7. 7 years ago or so, yes. Wintel platforms easily handle FCP & CS6 platforms now and the great Apple is just a widget sideshow. Cool looking effers but over rated & over priced. Pity but true.

  8. It's not looking good for the Mac Pro if these geekbench scores are correct:

Apple's New Mac Pro Begins Showing Up in Benchmarks - Mac Rumors

These Macs needed to be smoking given the length of time they've let us dangle. This really begs the question why they haven't made a dual CPU version and whether Apple's style over substance iattitude isn't poisoning the well.

  9. got the iMac back today..great service etc

but its still not working..its exactly as it was, except, theyve changed the LCD screen, changed the optical drive, replaced the not so 'Magic' mouse, replaced the logic board..

it still wont read discs, but they have got iphoto working...

currently waiting for them to call me back later to arrange another collection..the helpful chap i spoke to said that they will almost certainly replace the hard drive....the computer is 15 months old.
i can only receive a new replacement once its received a certain amount of repairs..all the above only count as a single repair...exchanging the machine would probably be cheaper in the long run....plus i get the deep joy of spending 3 days reinstalling everything from my time machine backup...

lets hope it gets sorted this time because im about a minute away from putting my fist through it.

  10. Bet you don't:wink:

  11. junk the hard drive and get an SSD.

    It will be miles faster.

  13. Recent Apple convert here. Cant fault the product and service. Just the software conditions that piss me off...

  14. as i said, ive been using them since the 90s and the last two have been nothing but trouble.

  15. The wife's Mac Book Pro is pretty ropey too. Lovely build quality but runs like crap.

  16. Sounds like you've had a really bad un Funky.

I'm a recent convert to Mac. I got so fed up with trying to turn my PC on or off and having to wait for windows updates. Also they just get slower and slower. Forget all that cleaning software crap for PCs. I worked with a guy who used to work for Microsoft and we were discussing getting PCs back up to speed and how windows gets bogged down after a while with bloated registries etc and he said that the only sure fire way of doing this was to reinstall windows every 12 to 18 months, depending on use. Not really practical of course but I had to resort to it a few times. Then Windows 8 turned into the ultimate disappointment. My PC nearly suffered a similar fate to yours so I know your frustration! Now I've never liked Apple as a company but enough was enough with windows and PCs.

Back in February I bought the latest 27" iMac specced up to the max for home and a 13" Macbook pro with retina display for travel. I love the operating system, The build quality is superb and the reliability? Well touch wood they've both been faultless. Super fast and unlike windows they have shown no sign of slowing down. Apple sales support are nice folks too, so they should when you spend the best part of 4k on two computers.

I think when you get a bad one it ends up being one thing after another. Lets see how good Apple support are for you. Keep us posted.

  17. Actually this discussion reminds me a bit of the Mutley discussion.

Someone gets a bad one with issues and suddenly the entire brand is a load of dross.

As I said, I just think that Funky has been a bit unlucky. At the shop we don't get that many machines back, and no more iMacs than anything else.

My one beef is that I am fairly sure that all these products have built-in obsolescence. My iPhone runs slower and slower (it's still fine, but not as quick as it was). You notice this when using the camera. Now it has to think before it takes a picture. Why? Because the iOS 6 is clearly slowing it down, and I suspect this is deliberate to get you to buy a new one. I imagine that the same thing that happens with Mac OSX or any other operation system. It's all a conspiracy to keep you consuming.
