ok - pretty sure I know what's required but I am a little surprised at what I must not have, at least according to the testers I have spoken to. No lights... Fair enough. I explained that I would be keeping indicators and a stop light for safety. I was clearly told that it must be all or nothing, if you have indicators and / or stop light then you must have lights also and you would be MOT'ed as if you were after a full certificate. Sounds bizarre to me... So if I then get my ticket, get home and fit stop light and indicators do I then risk a tick from ole bill for not having lights?
No as long as it was presented with nowt, its all fine. A smartass traf pol will waste your time if you do have indicators and no brake light tho, keep your MOT slip on you to save hassle!
A rear reflector for some unknown reason seems to be the only requirement and a warning device (shouting not allowed). MOTORCYCLE MOT TEST
Strange set of rules - IMHO it should not be allowed to be on public road, unless the vehicle was type approved as so, for road use. (which i very much doubt would happen, ever) Why not take the rear brake of as well then? Remove the seat belts from the car - and take of the doors as well, now we are on it? It will all save weight?
It's all as clear as mud! Thinks switches are ok, lights have to be permanently disconnected or covered.....Or maybe both...
In my case it;s for a track bike that will have no lights or indicators 90% of the time. Now and then I may wish to take it up the road to test bits and bobs, then I will for my own safety wish to fit the stop light and indicators. I also wish to insure the bike and getting an MOT and 3rd part T&F seems to be the best way of doing this.
I done checked the full manual link at the top of the page I posted ,........... http://www.motuk.com/bike/1-1.asp ..............yes, you need a stop lamp working off both brakes and a reflector........That's all in the way of lighting.
Horn is all that's needed, and reflector. As said its all or nothing. then again I have a full mot. Does that mean I have to ride around with everything working or can I go without lights etc as bike is in trck mode at the moment.
Yep brake light is a fitted to a modded number plate hanger. Three cap heads and then the six electrical bullet connectors to disconnect to remove it. Rear light was a cheapy custom type one from demon twats just held on with silocone. I can send a pick tomorrow if you want.
No, if it permenant lay disconnected of covered up it doesn't get tested. This inspection applies to: all machines, except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are . only used during daylight hours, and . not used at times of seriously reduced visibility If this situation occurs the machine presenter should be issued with an advisory notice recording the above and it should also be recorded on the carbon copy of the VT20.
I always thought it was mandatory to have just a speedo, reflector and hooter, but this infers that a brake light is required..................to most of the bikes we are using..... (Its a copy of the Stop Lamp text from the MOT manual) Exemptions For this test if a stop lamp is fitted, it must meet the requirements of this inspection, but need not be fitted to a machine which: a. cannot exceed 25mph, or b. was first used before 1 January I936.or c. was first used before 1 April 1986 and which has an engine capacity of less than 50cc. Operation Stop lamps may operate in conjunction with either the front or the rear brake, or both. On machines first used on or after 1 April 1986, the stop lamps must operate by the application of each system.
This inspection applies to; all machines except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or has such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are (see 1.1). 1.1 being my post above. This infers that you don't need them. Contradicts itself. Mates bike has 'daytime' mot. Horn and reflector only. All other signals can be give old school using your hands, not that anyone would know what you're doing nowadays.
See section 1:3.....it is specifically making a distinction between lights and indicators in general; and stop lights. F-me........give the slowing down hand signal (IE Braking) and the locals round here would think you were either camp or trying to take off.
