Here is a company in Italy that specialise in restoring Bimota. Their website has complete parts manuals, by model, so you can check for similarities in frame/forks etc. http://www.bimotaclassicparts.com/en/content/41-db2-sr-900 I have to say that I can see no similarities between the pictures posted and any of the Bimota DB models (the ones with Ducati engines). I'm sure if you contacted them, with and clear photos and engine frame numbers then they could validate.
If the link posted by Stuartanthony doesn't help with identifying the bike, perhaps contacting Ducati and/or Bimota directly with the information suggested above, and using the links from earlier posts, would help confirm or eliminate some of the options currently being considered for the bike's origins. I remember seeing what initially looked like "red herring" chassis designs in early F3 which might throw people off the trail as to their origin only to find they'd had a "new broom" approach to a previous design in the quest for change.
if anyone wants to take up the frame search, probably don't need to say even - the rather large dia steel ring nesting/welded in on the first "upright" tube from the front is a massive clue, might be one each side.
Hi Jane. Afraid to say it does look like a Ducati special to me. Nothing there that says Bimota to me (I’ve had several) The very essence of Bimotas is the frame and I’ve never seen one thats been ‘modded’ (or old think of a reason you would want to?) but the frame does look Ducati based. A Bimota frame number (for ducati series) will start DB and there would be a frame plate plus the stamping on the steering head. Engine and frame numbers WON’T match as bought in batches from Ducati and randomly allocated.The engine number may help IF it was originally in a ducati frame but I dont know if Ducati would keep any records of the batches they sold to Bimota.I always suspected that ducati kept the best casting and engines for their own bikes anyway!
