A few hours with the saw, there were two high spots, one on the top tubes and the wire pads on the exhaust. I probably could have left abit more of the exhaust mounting point, but I wanted nothing fouling the carbon seat. Next is grinding the tops flat, and cutting and grinding the peg mounts. I have some spare seat foam I will line the top with. Tried an exhaust paint on the back box, doesn’t look too bad imo.
As the sun had started to work it’s magic the past week, I decided to use my remaining holiday to work on the bikes, but sods law out childminder had an emergency and the grandparents have got covid so my plan has fallen through. As I didn’t want to break out the angle grinder with the lad stomping about I decided to leave finishing the subframe until the weekend, so I have washed the parts I have to put on, and started stripping the paint off a spare headlight bucket I got off eBay. Picked up a nice set of levers as well.
After a long day, subframe is done(just needs paint), touched up the crankcase paint, new levers on(supposed to be for the 899 but went straight on the 749), carbon tail tidy fitted, and ohlins rear shock and custom carbon covered swingarm fitted(not 100% with the look though).
Little update, I had to cut the subframe further, the one piece carbon tail was still fouling on the top tubes, so I cut them down to the top of the rubber covers. Also added some braketech rotors to the front. I’m in two minds to have the frame powder coated in a dark gunmetal grey, added a pic of a 748 with this colour, would like to know what you guys think. cheers
So I decided to keep the titanium exhaust I bought last year, problem was it would not fit over the carbon tail section. Today I took out the dremmel and started cutting the apertures out of the tail, abit nerve racking cutting into a 400 quid carbon tail section, but it turned out ok, just some final sanding to be done on the top sections that were cut. I will also drill a small hole on the top of the heat shield area, to bolt the carbon to the exhaust (I don’t like it when the tail section is flapping on the 999/749).
I have used clear silicone sealant on other grilles but yours looks like they will be almost touching the exhaust itself - not sure how well silicone sealant would fare subject to that heat.
Silicone stands up to a remarkable amount of heat. When my son was a lot younger he bought a VFR400 Honda that had seen better days. Several of the exhaust studs had been sheared and the previous owner had used silicon to seal the exhaust headers to the heads. Surprisingly it lasted the 6 or so months that he had it before seizing the engine due to it overheating when the radiator failed. I'm sure it would have lasted a lot longer too.
Just a little update, money has recently been going on the mrs birthday and the z4 so the bikes have been neglected abit, I managed to secure a mono subframe to go in place of my cutdown item. Still hunting for some axial ohlins for the carbon bike and some 848/1098 showas for the radical. 749r Fuel tank is still with jhp, hopefully have it back at the end of the month.
Long overdue update, house move and a more demanding job has left me with little time the latter part of the year, however the move is now done and I’m balancing things abit better now. Slowly sorting everything from the move, so should be set for the new year, I will then proceed to touch up the paint work on the engines. Things should move abit quicker now as I can work on the bikes irrespective of weather conditions, looking forward to finishing at least one by the summer. Good thing is the hyperstrada is still in one piece and running.
