I managed to clip a mirror in traffic the other day and bust one of the hand guards. The other one was also broken when I hit the cyclist last year. Before I go ahead and order some expensive Ducati replacements does anyone have any suggestions for something sturdier? I've also looked at adding bark busters but wasn't keen on the look of them really.
The guards on their own are only about 15 quid each. I've seen a few different alternatives fitted but none have really worked IMO even to point of restricting lever movement and have probably cost more? Might not be bullet proof, but the stock ones fit and work.
What he said - Barkbusters are the only way to go - I have lost 2 hand guards due to silly incidents, but my Barkbusters removed the mirror from some tw4t in a car on the motorway who tried to stop me filtering, without so much as a scratch.
Nelly, i didn't think you could order just the guard on its own any more ?!? You used to be able to, but now (as of a year or so back) they only sell the guard complete with indicator (which is actually in its own box stuffed inside the hand guard one ) Same goes for the indicator, you have to buy the whole lot or nothing... If they have started to sell them seperately again that is great news
Sometimes having something that gives is better then having something rigid. Something that does not give will potentially pull your bars and change your direction into the object you have just clipped, leaving your hand guards intact at the cost of other more serious / expensive damage. At £15 a guard, why do you need ~£100 barkbusters.....I can understand if you are traveling across the Mongolian plains, but in the urban jungle ? Not mocking anyone's choice in having them, just find it hard to justify to myself.
I'd also heard that you had to buy them with the indicators as well now. I shall investigate, are there any cheaper options for parts other than my local dealer?
£100! Mine were £27 from Dirtbikebitz and a lot cheaper than a replacement guard/indicator unit. When put to good use, they also save your fingers from getting broken.
Actually it was a low speed knock on a 4x4 wing mirror whilst filtering that did for mine, and the other one was broken in a bike bay whilst parked. Maybe Bark busters are a good idea?
Guys, I needed a spare handguard after a birdstrike (the bird died... ) and I go to these guys for my bits now .... they sell the handguards separately. John, I can vaguely remember something along the lines of with/without indicators but I've replaced guards on their own, so couldnt saybfor sure. Got a pair on the shelf for a job next week, so if they've done a U-turn then its all good.....
ive got barkbusters on ( just in case) got a good deal from Chainspeed, and it was easier to source a prevention than look for parts to cure a potential incident
That will be me then ! Good job and good price as usual, thanks Neil. I think the oem hand guards look good on the bike and do the job just fine. Had both of mine replaced at Cornerspeed this morning after breaking them at different times over the last couple of years. Bike looks as good as new, Neil is a Top Lad and worth a visit if you have not been to see him yet.
Still considering Bark busters, but commuting through London traffic everyday it concerns me that I might end up paying out more for all the damage I will do the mirrors on the yummy mummies 4WD's.
