1200 DVT Engine Management Light On - During Rain!

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by MrACD, Oct 19, 2021.

  1. 2015 DVT I've had for a week. Was riding home yesterday, in the rain, when the light popped on. Bike seemed to be ok, no power loss or issues I could feel. Then in 4th gear whilst the engine was under load if I opened the throttle the bike would judder and lose power, like it was misfiring. So I put it in neutral and revved it to red line, put back in 4th and opened the taps in 4th and it pulled out no issues so that went away.

I've since had the exhaust off to check the valve and that works as it should, lubricated just incase. Took the cover/protector off the front cylinder and pulled the leads to the spark plugs and all that seemed dry. When it's ticking over, it seems to be ok if I blip the throttle. Had it on trickle all night in the garage but still the lights on this morning, it seemed to start ok. Apart from get it to the shop to get the codes read, anything else I can try? Only had the thing a week. Thanks.

  2. I had my engine management light come on once, it was the rear number plate light that had failed. Could be something simple like that.

But given that it did have a moment of poor running it probably is easiest to get a computer attached. All you can really do is visually check things are connected and not wet and have no obvious wiring damage. I would try the MAPS sensors, air temp sensor and lambda sensors on the exhaust.

  3. Cheers thanks, I will call the local bike shop, hopefully they can do 'Ducati's' - closest dealer is about 30 miles away.

  4. The only thing I can find wrong with this is when I press the fog light button, it shows on screen and the warning triangle appears too. I don't have any fog lights!

  5. I had a cam angle sensor fail that made the bike respond similar to what you describe. Mine happened to be the vertical cyl intake sensor, but any would do the same thing. An OBDII code reader and the right adapter will get you the code and which cylinder, I unplugged a sensor to determine which cyl was A or B and went from there. My local Stealer (150 mi away) gave me some BS story about how it was the way I was starting the bike so I gave up and troubleshot myself.

  6. I had to go get some fuel before I took it to the bike shop, so I gave it a good tonking on the way there and back. Put it in the garage, just gone out to ride to the repairers and would you believe it, it's gone out. What a faff, looks like it doesn't like being in the rain. I may strip all the bodywork off and make sure everything is nice and tucked away as it should as when it had the Desmo done maybe all didn't go back away. I don't know, hope it's not like this every time its wet!

  7. My 1260 did this when I got an alert after winter. The battery had gotten quite low as I'd moved house and not sorted out my charger until my tracker sent me a message saying the battery was low. Dealer seemed to think this might also have triggered a dash warning too as the bike recognised the same problem. The morning I took it to the dealer the light had gone out. Apparently a number of ignition cycles, can't recall how many, makes the alert disappear (only if it's a minor one that's no longer an issue though). However, the error will still be logged and readable when it's plugged in.

  8. I had trouble with my main spark plug leads, not sure if it was horizontal, vertical or both but it would only misfire below 4500rpm or similar with half or more throttle. Also made worse in the rain. I would not have picked it as being spark plug leads, but it was!

  9. Could you have the wiring ready for the fogs and some water is getting into the connector? Hopefully someone else with a DVT can confirm if they can trigger that triangle the same way you did.

  10. If the bike had fog (auxiliary) lights fitted and enabled then removed you will get an error when you attempt to switch them on.

  11. on my DVT I cant activate the fog lights icon when pressing the switch so I suspect it may be as above, the bike is looking for the lights and cant find them.
the triangle is a general fault warning triangle and covers many things...

  12. That only your friendly Ducati dealer can read the error code to find out what the problem is... Shame that there isn't a reader on the open market compatible with the MY15> Multistradas that can do this and be capable of resetting the service indicators. The government push for everything to be sealed and tamper-proof in the automotive world plays right into the manufacturers desire to keep us tied to their dealer network's pot of gold. Admittedly it was my choice to buy such a bike...

  13. there is such a reader and freely available...if you have deep pockets, the TEXA diagnostic tools is allegedly the very same one that Ducati dealers use and available to you and I...at a cost, near £2K with appropriate leads, I seen it, used it and reset service indicators with it, nice kit, bit spendy for the average home mechanic :)

  14. Now you mention it I do recall hearing about that. £2k :astonished: I bought a pukka VAG-COM lead and module but then I've owned several VAG cars since, both daughters now have VWs, even the ex-wife has a SEAT. Was only about £250 at the time and has paid for itself. £2k is silly money, hopefully someone will bring out something more affordable in the not so distant future as once my extended warranty is up, for major stuff, I'll likely be going to a local independent who has a good reputation. Have yet to ask if he has one of those (TEXA, not a reputation ). Oil and regular services will become DIY tasks if I have the time.

  15. Yes I’m lucky and I’ve known my local bike dealer for many years… needless to say when he aquired the latest TEXA kit I encouraged him to buy the Ducati lead
Clever stuff, you connect the base unit to the bike then the interface talks via Bluetooth, many menus and dangerous looking reset this, calibrate that begging to be pressed :)

  16. Well, the light has gone out by itself, no sure what it was tbh and hasn't been on since. I use it daily for work so it has got wet again. The things I have done is took the end can off and WD40'd the hell out of the exhaust flap, after every run when it rains spray the horizontal HT lead heads with WD40 to disperse the water. As for the fog light connector I haven't looked for that yet! - So far so good.

When I get my car I will put the bike up for a bit, strip her down and give it a deep clean and also replace the front HT leads and see if I need to cap off the fog connector.

Apart from what's happened and the need for new pads, tyres and a seat I love the bike!
