I had wondered the same as I have just come from the Gs to the V4 , not a bad choice but two different animals but fantastic bike all the same , happy adventures as I had for many many years.
I tried the V4 and yes it’s superb engine, but do you really need all that horsepower for touring?, the tank range isn’t too appealing and I’m not convinced and don’t need the active cruise on a bike, not to mention the comparable price between the manufacturer’s equivalent models. As @Captain says above they are both different animals and i’d be trying to ride the V4 more as a sports bike than an adventure tourer, also when testing both bikes back to back I found the big GSA much easier to ride and more forgiving on the roads familiar to me. I’ve now owned 3 Multistrada’s and each one has had some sort of electrical fault and the latest 1260 used a fair amount of oil on any decent trip. So with this in mind and it been out of warranty it was time to change. I managed to achieve a decent deal to swap to the GSA and found the overall dealership experience at BMW much better than at my local Ducati one. But ultimately Mrs Tyke preferred the pillion seat on the BMW
I have just ordered my 3rd* GS.and as said above, they are actually easy to ride, and easy to ride quick. That is once you get out of your head any preconceptions, then you will find a lovely chassis, with surefooted handling. It has the best anti dive out there too. Good tyres are literally the only upgrade worth making. Then invest in plenty of miles to find out what they are all about. They take just a little working out. Funny enough, reading above, the difference in dealer experience here was dramatic too. Ducati Limoges could not give a damn. BMW Perigueux could not be more professional and helpful. * I keep trying other bikes and have been disappointed with comfort AND handling.
