Insurance premiums survey (MTS1200 / UK)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by AndyW, Apr 17, 2012.

  1. Yup - for once dual citizenship bites me in the rear! (well, that and tax)

I love the bike, but the insurance situation has me pondering what to do when I hit the marker that will allow me to sell/trade it without getting a tax penalty.
Doubly irritating that all the training/schools/etc I did in the US count for naught now.

  2. mce.

  3. I'm the cheapest kind of risk, no accidents or convictions, riding 50 years, SDP (no commute but with pillion), fully comp age 68. I had been with Carole Nash for many years as they seemed about the right price including the breakdown cover. When I got the Ducati, the renewal quote was a joke. More than double the cheapest alternative. With the manufacturer's breakdown cover, I didn't need theirs but they won't remove it. Even so, their price had jumped enormously and they weren't budging so I had no choice but to move. It appears that they have finally got too big to bother about being competitive. Now with Bennetts but I will check every renewal for best price. Annual UK breakdown might be got for £30-40 but European cover starts at about £70 and the cover varies enormously. Some doesn't even get the bike and driver home to the UK so read the small print. Decent cover is around £90. Don't bother with the RAC/AA, they are just a joke price unless you get their cover through someone else.

  4. Yes check renewals with Bennetts I had all the covers helmets breakdown etc with 50% off total cost.
Renewal came this year with them at full cost and they renew automatically if you don't inform them
I had to re inform them that they had written my bike off in june last year  its now been noted so just be cautious

  5. Mine was about £150 last year....mind you year before when the bike had just come out it cost 450 odd - very pleased when I saw the renewal!

  6. I use Vehicle Rescue Direct for my European cover - very good prices and repatriation is included for both rider and bike

  7. In the end I went for Ducati Insurance...
Ducati Insurance - online insurance centre
....as I decided it was about time I came clean about the mods to my bike, not least the full Termi! Everywhere else I tried started bumping the premiums big time as soon as modifications/accessories were mentioned.
    The Ducati Insurance premium £318

    MTS1200S Sport
Modifications - all declared inc full Termi (cover for value up to £2000)
Fully Comp - SDP only (No commuting)
    Age 50
Max NCD (no claims or convictions)
XS of just £250 (although doubles if bike not in the locked garage and stolen within 50m of the house)
Uk & Euro basic breakdown cover
    Legal cover
    Foriegn use entitlement
Mileage - up to 8000 pa

  8. £255 including legal protection, Helmet and Leather cover, RAC cover and Courtesy bike. This is with MCE.

34years old, 10 years ncb, live up in Scotland in an area seemingly yet to invent bike crime, 2011 MTS 1200 S Touring, 4000 miles a year, fully comp and SDP including commuting.

Last year it was £440 with Express insurance.

  9. Bob Cooper - interesting that your insurance was more expensive when the bike was first on sale. I had a crazy quote for mine in 2010 and disputed it hotly until I discovered that the insurance call centre works from a drop down model list on their computer and the Multistrada 1200 wasn't on it yet so they just used the only other 1200 on there which was the 1198 superbike. They were quoting for the superbike and wouldn't budge because they were too brain dead to admit their system was not up to date. That was Carole Nash. Needless to say, I found another insurer who was not working on a 2009 model list.

  10. I had problems when the bike was new because none of the insurers had the 1200 MTS listed so I had to end up getting a customised quote hence the high price - I was less than impressed as you can imagine

  11. Right, just had the renewal from MCD.

£144.16 fully comp - they want an extra £30 for legal expenses - is it worth having??
    This is with Aviva
    9+ yrs NCB
    Bonus protected
    £0 voluntary excess
    £100 compulsory excess
    Pillion cover included
    SD&P including commuting
    Annual mileage limit of 7999

I live in SW Sheffield and just turned 50

It states under Make & Model 'Test Groups' - wtf?!?
but the reg they have is correct so they must know the make and model....

  12. BTW do you think declaring an after market exhaust would make much of a difference to the price of an insurance quote?....

  13. Legal Expenses is a must, unless you have similar cover under other policies. And you should declare everything you've done to the bike, as otherwise they have an excuse to cancel your policy through 'non disclosure'....I.e. you failed to disclose the true nature of the vehicle they were insuring. This can leave your policy void! Not worth the risk. In terms of the exhaust, if it doesn't enhance performance by more than 5%, you should be fine, but be aware that a lot of policies will repair the bike to standard, so they won't replace things like an aftermarket exhaust.

  14. Cheers David - Andy, do you know for definite that the 3rd extended warranty year does not come with Ducati breakdown cover?

  15. No problem Bob....and no, the extended warranty DOESN'T come with breakdown cover.

  16. I was with MCE Bob when I 1st got the Multi in 2010 when a lot of Insurers didn't have it listed & they did a UN Specified group scheme which was also through Aviva who are the largest UK Insurance Company. Personally I wouldn't bother with the legal assistance as it's only of use if an accident is someone else's fault & then there are 1,000's of Ambulance Chaser's out there that will act for you on a no win no fee basis.

  17. £300 with Ducati Insurance.

Standard bike, full no claims, clean licence, 53, riding for 35 years, I.A.M test which gets a bit of discount, SK postcode which being close to Manchester is rated a bit high I think.

Socil domestic pleasure and commuting, no legal or breakdown cover, mileage 6000 per year, though I've got other bikes on another policy, as this was cheaper than a multi bike policy.

  18. OK, so I got in touch with the Tesco compare people and these are their best quotes.

    Comprehensive.....£282

    Third Party Only....£112

    Third Party Fire & Theft...£9,197

Yep, that's not a mis-print, nine grand! - explain that one.

3 years no claims, clean history, passed test Aug. 2008, SDP use only, garaged, Duc alarm system, 2000 mile limit, heated grips/tail tidy/keyless fuel cap listed as accessories fitted, valued at £15k, no pillion, £350 xs, Surrey location, non-protected no claims, no legal/claims assistance cover......and no sugar in my tea.

  19. I'd go fully comp....it's clearly a bargain! :upyeah: Catch it while you can....the price will surely go up, and how much will that be?

  20. I got a quote of £263 from Ducati Insurance (Equity Red Star)

    1200S, Pikes Peak paintwork
54, no claims, one SP30 5 years ago
Garaged, commuting, 12 yrs protected NCD
    8,000 miles per year
    Surrey

However I checked the wording on the policy was any convictions on your licence, but the small print said in the last 5 years, I amended the quote and added the single SP30, plus removed the Oxford chain (as I don't always use this at home) and the premium went up to £325

Quote from Carol Nash came in at £377 also with Equity Red star but includes the breakdown and legal cover

I've got a family/individual RAC cover which I guess would cover the bike, but I've used the Carol Nash service a few times in the past, not sure if I should give this up?

Other options included a £400 excess - £145 with KGM (not heard of them) or £309 with Highway Insurance. Decided to go with KGM but the value on the bike was only listed as £1,300!

Went back to Ducati Insurance and started again, this time I managed to get it (with a value of £12,000) for £156.20 from KGM (result!)

Lots of the other comparison sites require a mobile number which I'm not prepared to give out, so they didn't even get to the quote stage...

Checked the RAC individual cover we have and the bike is included...
