We used to have to go in pairs. I collected my buddy one night and he was utterly wankered. I managed to keep him asleep in the back of the van. All went swimmingly until we came back from a breakdown. I was 300 metres from camp and he decided to get out the back of the van. Which would have been fine but I was still doing 40mph. I shit you not…. I looked into my mirrors to see him flailing along the road to a bloody and bruised stop….
Not working, not on call (well, except for technical back up to the oncall Engineer if needed) Private energy sector, Field service Engineer, DRUPS. ( Dynamic Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply)
Managed to blag off the Christmas break (Christ knows how as I blagged it last year too) so back on the 4th Domestic appliance service engineer for Whirlpool.
Road Transport & Warehousing, its quiet but I don't have to book any holidays, so will be working all but the bank hols. I hate enforced time off in winter and always offer to work any of the bank holidays for no extra money just a day in lieu will do, I prefer to take my time off in better weather.
I tend to work Christmass period (Children now grown up) as its a quiet time at work, so as long as I have my phone with me I can provide an oncall type of service. IT Manager for Europe's largest stationery company.
Offshore oil and gas support (aka glorifed taxi driver) Got Xmas Day off but then on call Boxing Day and working right through to the New Year. Kids are all away this year so it's just me and my missus. Father in law in hospital and I'm going to spend the 25th with my terminally ill mother. I've had better years TBH.
There is maritime propulsion support???? Always been told to fix it myself... Spent my last Christmas and Boxing Day away loading fuel in Santos. Never again
Since having a child, I refuse to work Christmas but I used to work all of them. Don’t miss the Police days of working a Christmas night, depressing. I now own a company that provides security (physical, IT/cyber, residential, due diligence, ethical hacking), private staff and asset management to Family Offices/people with a few extra pennies. Working a few days between Christmas and NY but will be back 5th Jan in the office. Perks - loads of travel and private jets. Negatives - they call you 24/7 and have very unique problems.
Im working through until Feb on a project in China still.. Client is Thyssenkrupp industrial /Coke plant started in May 21 as Mechanical Engineer, now also taken over as Site Manager. its been along shift so far...
Oil fired heating engineer, usually working out in the sticks…. Guess who’s phones already ringing like billy-oh Although we’re ‘closed’ from yesterday till the 3rd Jan, we do go out to long standing customers and vulnerable people. I rekon I will have xmas day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day off and that’s it.
it does sound a bit like an oxymoron doesn’t it? Essentially it’s authorised hacking into a computer system. Large companies and organisations use this process to replicate likely attacks from external sources. The idea is to learn how the bad guys do it so you can stay one step ahead. Ethical hackers working for big blue chips are godlike characters!
Exactly this. We do the same physically as well but that’s known as something else. I’m lucky really as I hire people straight out of Military Intelligence/SIS peeps as they have been on mediocre government salaries and have the latest in IT software exposure to protect companies from hostile countries/groups. Not only that, you can then legally track people who have penetrated computer systems, find out their location and then more importantly, who’s paid them to hack said company. It’s quite fun. My inner geek for the latest defensive measures in the tech world, gives me a boner. And it’s also bloody scary. There is truly some terrifying people out there.
