Termi's markings

  1. Just noticed whilst buffing up me Termi's,that stamped on the metal banding on the front part of the pipes is the wording "FOR RACE USE ONLY",this baffles me,no pun intended,as, ok the db killers as they are refered to are, ahem, not in place, however if they were, would this still apply?.I assume they come stamped when they leave the factory,so surely this doesn't apply if the baffles are in place. These cans are brand new having only recently been fitted by the ducati main dealer,ie not bought second hand etc on e bay.Your thoughts,Ta

  2. Not road legal... Either if you get stopped by the police ( maybe AndyB could comment here ) or at the MoT. I would be making tracks straight back to the dealer to find out what they say. Road legal cans should have a CE marking, and should not be stamped "race use only" or "not for road use". Even if they were legal, taking the baffles out makes them illegal... But I'm sure you already know that.

  3. Don't think my Termis are marked with anything. But they're loud enough that it's easy to tell if they are legal or not...

Think the deal is that they need a CE stamp or have to be original fitment from the factory to be legal. So if they're aftermarket, like Termis are, they need to be marked.

    I think.

  4. The majority of termis are not road legal. Andyp79, yours will be stamped up on one of the bands. The only road legal ones for the 848/ **98 are the titanium ones.

  5. Aye I figured the only legal ones were the Titanium ones, but didn't know mine were marked. I thought they might be but have never seen it. I've not looked very hard though.

  6. My Termi's are stamped 'for race use only' and they get through the MOT no problem as long the DB killers are in. You could always discretely grind it off!!!.

  7. noise is not an absolute fail. It's at the discretion of the tester, however there's no requirement for them to turn the motor on.

Re the markings, cover them with tape. The tester should not remove anything during the test. If the Police have an issue, they will most likely send you to have the bike tested by the MoT people. One of my bikes was 119db - I kid you not - and that never had any problems.

  8. I'm sure that we can all agree that passing an MoT and being legal are not necessarily the same thing... If it's marked as "race use only" it shouldn't pass an MoT, and if the police pull you you could get nicked for it. HOWEVER - unless you are makiing a lot of noise in a built-up area, or are behaving like a pillock - or if they are having a bad day and / or a "purge", then the chances are you'll never have to worry about it...

  9. Some say that if you buff them hard enough that writing wears off...

  10. The stamping on mine almost goes through the whole thickness of the band. If you buffed it off there would be no band left.

What it needs is a new unstamped band but i can't find any. I did get some from a member on here but they do not match for rivet spacing.

  11. Or take the nice stamped straps off the OE cans.

note-won't work if you have slash cuts:tongue:

  12. Not sure which cans you've got but I recently repacked the Termis on my Monster and I'm fairly certain the strap on one end would be interchangeable with the one on the other? I would think they would be available as spares?

  13. That was my first thought.
i did ask a dealer and they said they could find no parts listing for the rivet straps but maybe there is.

I have normal 848 termi's (not slash cuts)

  14. Didn't they do away with the CE on exhaust requirement?

However, for the MOT Jerry is on the button, stick the db killers in (to be safe) and cover the writing, I use that aluminium foil tape which makes a very neat job. This has worked fine for me....
Or, simply stick the OE cans on for the day...:upyeah:

  15. If the police tug you I think it's 3 points !
So what you do is .... La la la get the not for road use buffed off simples !
Then if asked if stamped Di look please.. If its not there they can say nowt!
Or do as me .. Cut em in half!

  16. I seem to remember that being caught with noisy (but marked as race use) cans is a motoring offence, resulting in points being awarded at worst. Being caught with exhausts which have had such markings 'polished' off is a criminal offence, namely fraud. Theoretically this could result in a criminal record, with consequences such as difficulty with mortgages, loans, jobs etc, and a magistrate shoving a pineapple up your ass...

  17. I was shopping for some you cans and difference between road legal was having the cats fitted.

  18. The straps you are referring to are stainless steel?

Why not remove the rivets, turn the straps over and re-fix. The straps won't be stamped on the reverse face. You will need pop rivets with a closed end to prevent exhaust gas leakage. When I repacked my DP cans (made by Remus who also make the OE cans) I remember the rivets being 4mm diameter.

  19. So remind me.....how do they prove who was guilty of the 'fraud'?

Maybe the owner is the innocent party in someone fraudulently selling them race cans.

It's not gonna happen....they can't prove it and ain't gonna peruse it....it's not cost effective.
