916 Foam Clock Surround

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Gustav, Jan 4, 2022.

  1. Is it possible to buy a new foam clock surround anywhere?

  2. Hopefully someone with a memory that works will add helpful details - I remember some aftermarket versions have been made in the past for 900SS (vaguely similar).. @Nasher ?

  3. Chris, Gustav, the Carbie 900SS style were still available a couple of years ago from Ducati, but were a lighter Grey not the darker more Black original colour.

The later Inj 900SS ones are the same as used on the 916 etc and are readily available really cheaply
    Eg - https://www.stein-dinse.biz/product_info.php?products_id=81924

  4. There we are then! :) I had a feeling they were still available.

  5. Probably, Gustav has not been on for 10 hours so maybe someone else on here,
Its been on ebay for around 6 months i have a few bits in my watch list so thought i would let this one be known :grinning:

  6. That's a shame as i'm after an original Black replacement one for the 900ss.

  7. u don't got a felt tip pen?

  8. I sold on the one I brought as they really are a different colour:

  9. So basically no chance for an original one then unless of course you get lucky with New / Old stock.

  10. What a permanent marker pen,

  11. part-joking, this is the answer many times on car and bike furniture but not a good idea on this foam, would change surface appearance. It's massively irritating that no-one has tapped into somewhere where v. similar possibly used as packing or wadding and is probably thrown away by the ton. Even by today's exorbitance, this shouldn't cost more than a couple of quid/cut it out yourself..

  12. I've a carbon fiber one installed on there at the minute, but i started removing it as not the original factory look for me.I'll keep on searching until the cows come home.

  13. I looked into having some made, but they would have been quite expensive for a batch of 25pcs.
They would obviously have to be aimed at restorers, and I never found a foam that was a close enough match to the original for people to pay a premium price for them.

  14. the slot-racing fraternity took advantage of a high-density "foam" used exclusively for anti-movement/vibration in the aircraft industry, the first discoverer did well out of it until the monopoly was broken.

  15. It's a shame the factory doesn't remanufacture a small batch every 5 odd years for the collectors.

  16. kind of you to share*, seems too much of a coincidence that it's sold within a few hours of you posting, would have been nice to see someone acknowledge*.

  18. This is where mine came from:

Note despite the below text it turned up Grey instead of Black.

It was in Ducati packaging with a correct looking parts label etc, and I had no doubt it was genuine and had come from Ducati.

It was a direct replacement fit and function wise, not that it actually does anything apart from look 'Faux race'.
But it was not a cosmetic replacement in any way.
As well as the colour the foam was a different density and had a more solid skin than the original.

    I contacted Bike-parts but didn't get a response.
As it wasn't a lot of money, I just put it up on Ebay noting the colour difference in the text of the auction and sold it for what I Paid for it.
