V4 Apple Carplay Would Have Been Better

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by DREVIL, Feb 1, 2022.

  1. Off topic, but can we also have a poll on whether we would all like all the bells and whistles on the V2 models, a Panigale & Streetfighter V2 S, with Ohlins, paint lacquer, for a little extra. Not everyone wants 200+ BHP for the road.

    Now, back on topic...

  2. My wife’s Mercedes A class has a very decent Garmin sat Nav (which for some reason doesn’t have sped cameras?). My Volvo Xc40 has a rubbish Volvo sat Nav, appalling maps, horrible search facility and directions which seem to tell you to turn just after you’ve passed the junction. luckily it also has Apple CarPlay and I just use that, although I can get a full screen display.

  3. Poll added as a separate thread. Mods are welcome to merge, but I didn't see how to add a poll to an existing thread.

    Thanks.

  5. Speed camera warning is illegal in France and Germany so Merc would have disabled that function. Andy

  6. That’s what I thought, still odd on a car sold in the uk though

  7. Not really, only 1 set of parameters to deal with and IMO, it won't be long before it's illegal in the UK. Andy

  8. I think I can add a POI speed cam database on a card but I’ve been told “you are not to mess around with my car”

  9. The BMW app which does similar, is actually pretty cool, and doesn't look like a 3 year old made it.

  10. What I want for my other old knackers is what Porsche got so right with their Classic PCCM unit:

I don't know why Garmin / TomTom can't make a CarPlay GPS unit I could clip onto my Multi etc that I could also use in the car... I'd give a decent chunk of money for such a device.

  11. I have a V4S with a TomTom 550 mounted above the screen (I use an Iconic mount) and don't use the Sygic / Ducati app for two main reasons:-

1 - Ergonomics - I want the Sat Nav screen in my eye line so I don't have to drop (well only a very little) my vision to see what is ahead, be that a bend or a junction. No one seems to be looking at the ergonomics for sat nav screens on bikes or cars. They either need you to look down (bikes) or look at the centre of the car. Both of these mean that you have to take your eyes of the road and what is going on ahead. The solution is an HUD unit - be that projected on the car windscreen or on the helmet visor. The tech isn't there yet, anyone tried in an RAF Typhoon HUD helmet? - they are VERY heavy! With cars this will come and is there on some high end brands.

2 - Data collection - The new App based / Web systems are collecting huge amounts of data on where you go and how you get there as soon as you connect to the web via phones or sat nav. I ran the Ducati Phone App on my 1260 for two weeks and then looked at the data they had collected - I then deleted the app! Soon speed limits etc will be collected and an email will follow - (with fine!) should you have been a little heavy handed. Google already tells me how many miles I walked, drove, used public transport or rode on a motorcycle. It will take some time for the all systems to talk to each other but in the end they will; hopefully by then we will be transported in pods to where we
want to go and I will be long dead! As an Ex-IT integration consultant believe me it will happen but not soon :)

  12. I don’t mean to be contrary but if you are concerned about data collection it’s time to get off the web completely, literally everything you do is being collected already, it’s not in the future, it’s now… I know you know that but as you made the point about future, it’s here already

  13. You are right, the data is collected now BUT at the moment it is not integrated into the "Big Brother" state. It will happen in the future at some point, I am sure, with integrated databases but not at this time. Right now you can turn off location data / delete some tracking apps etc. and have a "degree of control" of your data but in many cases it is still collected or can be collected / tracked. In many cases that information is useful for consumers (and others) such as Amazon, Google, Ducati , BMW etc to give you a better "life experience". and many consumers accept that. I am just saying that personal data collection is the tip of the iceberg and could be mis-used in the future.
On the other hand it can, and is very useful to some tracking / security agencies - but we are getting off track for this forum. :)

  14. Buy a Beeline Moto device. For the money and on a motorbike it works very well. Less of a distraction too.

  15. Forward to 16 min 37, old Chopsy nearly stacked it. This is why I prefer my sat nav in my eyeline.

    He was a lucky boy.

  16. I don't understand why people tolerate this idiot... absolute throbber.

  17. If you have a mobile phone then your slave beacon is already active. A lot of us have trackers on our bikes and cars too. As regarding the "at some point" there's an EU roadmap for this already, which UK has signed up to and it's all hidden in plain sight. You'll see speed limiters and call-home functionality in vehicles today, and a lot of telemetry is captured by various systems of all modern vehicles.

I've unsubscribed from a few podcasts and YouTube channels lately that bang on about this stuff because it's depressing. Freedom is an illusion and all that, but these days you really need to suspend disbelief to feel free.

    You're welcome.

  18. It's lot more to do with the idiocy of making a video whilst riding.

I'm astonished the police have not come down hard on this, it's a fatality waiting to happen

  19. That would have been a head on if anything had been turning right. Very poor riding.

  20. You can’t, only the thread starter or mod can start a poll……maybe.:)
