Welding A Broken Frame

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Ivor, Feb 4, 2022.

  1. Have a m800 monster frame that was in a crash ( bought it for the engine), frame weld at the headstock is broken, what's the view on having this repaired, accepting that the frame would need to be checked for trueness etc?
Or does anyone want a broken m800 frame, no v5 ( long story that I'll share for anyone interested, including the dialog with DVLA) but can advise the VRN when we bought it.

  2. Send to moto liners they can fix it.

  3. Last time I enquired at Motoliners they wanted not only the engine bolted in the frame, but the whole plot presented in a rolling chassis, saying they couldn't deal with just a frame.

  4. Thanks, I'll enquire, long story involves the 800 engine in a 1000 frame and DVLA then throwing a hissy fit , now have a 800 engined 1000 that they will only issue a q plate to, so I can put the 800 back in the 800 frame and all will be well, I'll send Moto liners a picture and see what they say.
    Thanks

  5. You say no V5, is the 800 frame a write-off? If so then can you even use it on the road?

As for the DVLA not liking the 800 engine in the 1000 frame, did they say why? Asking because my Monster is a bitza - 900 engine in a 600 frame and I had no problem with DVLA when I built it (the frames are essentially the same).

As for welding the frame, should be no problem unless it's mangled. I've had frames welded for both repair and modification but with accident damage ensuring it's straight is the main issue which, is why they might want the engine/suspension etc. to make sure the alignment is spot on.

  6. Motoliners advised the frame could not be fixed. I don't think the bike had been 'cat'd' after the crash, though I didn't check. We had a log book with the original vrn. All got confusing with DVLA when we put the 800 engine in a 1000 frame, DVLA we're fine for a few years then threw a hissy fit and said the M1000 would have to have a 'Q' plate, with the frame number stamped out. Was Advised not to do this, so hence looking at options to use the 800 engined M1000, will probably have to buy a 1000 engine and sell the 800 engine

  7. All seems a bit strange.

My build was essentially - I put a 900 engine into an M600 frame, the DVLA asked for proof of the work. As I did it myself the only 'evidence' I had was the receipt for the purchase of the 900cc engine and they were happy to accept that.

The bike kept the same no. plate/identity as when it was a 600, the only update on the V5 being the new cc.

Guess it might have been different the other way round as the road tax would have been less...

  8. Yes, seems a bit odd, I might try DVLA again..my wife dealt with them last time...
