I’m looking to add a ‘special’ Ducati to my garage. I’ve currently got a Triumph Thruxton RS and a 675. The Thruxton will be staying and this will be a direct replacement for the 675. Budget is £20k, can stretch this slightly if needed. Usage will be limited due to having a few other fun cars available and the Thruxton, I’d estimate 500-1k sunny road miles per year and 1 or 2 track days. I want something that has the WOW factor. It has to feel an event when I take it out. Sound is a very important part of this and I want it to sound evil on the road, but there has to be silencers / noise killers available so I can do my track days. I’d prefer something that’ll hold its value reasonably well and not cost more than £1-2k in annual maintenance. I’d love a D16RR but sadly they’re way out of budget on both purchase and running costs. I was thinking of a ‘15/16 Panigale R as I see it as the last of the big twins, special engine (part supperleggera?) and fantastic looks. The electronics would also add a bit of reassurance on track. I’m not a fan of the final edition, partly due to the exhaust pipes but also I love red Ducati’s with a bit of white. My concern with this is I’ve been told the engine is problematic and if using it on track will require a rebuild that’ll end up costing way more than my annual maintenance budget. If that’s the case I also like the 1098R. They look special, have a special engine and the termignoni system sounds great as well. What are running costs like? Are the engines reliable? The only other option I can think is to add another £10k to the budget and get a V4R. I’m not sure it’s quite as special though and suspect there’s more to come from the V4 platform? I also like the idea of a big twin both as something different to my 675 and because that’s what I’ve always associated with Ducati. Are there any other models I’m missing? Any advice from others who have gone through a similar decision making process? Thanks!
Does it have to be a Sports bike? I love my Diavel 1260S, damn fast bike, rides and handles lovely and a real head turner when it’s out. Termi’s sound awesome too . I suppose it’s prob not everyone’s cup of tea though.

If you can, I'd buy Frasers 996R, but a 1098R would be a good shout at around 20K (ish) I dont count the 1199R as it didnt win anything, so for me its not special.
Ha, the Hyper did a pretty good job of keeping up on those Peak district roads. 1299 Anniversario was a beauty though
I'd say probably a Panigale R for that money, a second generation one if you can get one, will still be rideable, where as the older stuff you might find a little hard work.. (Tht's coming from someone who has had 4 daytonas, a thruxton R and Thruxton 900, and 2x 848's and 748's etc)
Ive got a 1098R which is semi special . But given a choice i think i would give the nod to the 999R over mine . Unsure why though.
I may be biased as I have an Anniversario ( along with other 2x 749r / 2x 999r ) but as it is the last of the limited number big twins you won’t go wrong with only 25 in the uk 500 world wide . Final edition was built until the spare parts bin ran empty. Historically Ducati will be remembered for their twins.
