So I have 3 bikes including the 2012 848 EVO ( with Datatool alarm) 5K miles and serviced at 4K but back in 2014 ( I bought it 2021) I periodically fire them up in the garage to keep them warmed, etc. Whilst they are all idling away I am at the bench sorting something else and I hear the 848 start to drop revs and then stop. Hmm walk over and try to restart - nothing no indication of ignition at all. Bike electrics/ dash behave as normal but not start -check fuel OK. After a few attempts and aware of the sprag clutch I stop put it back on charge. The bike is always on an optimate so I leave it for a few days and then retry but same result. The previous owner said his kids had unplugged the charger and the battery had been flattened and fair enough it often seem to be a bit marginal on turnover. So as per many posts new batteries plus the cable replacement / piggyback kit. All fitted - same result - no real difference in cranking speed, no start. Bridged the solenoid to see if it was ropey - no change, added a 650Ah car battery in parallel - nothing. I have had a complete failure of a datatool before - but this one works ( blip lights etc) so next step is do I have sparks /fuel. I can hear what i assume is the fuel pump pressuring on ignition on but the exhaust does not smell of petrol after repeated attempts which I thought it would. It is cold at the moment and I can see there is generally a bit of cold thing with some bikes but this was running - then stopped- - let see how this saga rolls out
Hi,I had the same problem with my evo corse this week, following the advice from Chris I replaced the 2 x micro relays to the right of the battery box and it cured the problem. Relays were £7 on Amazon for the pair. Hope this helps
Well things have gone from bad to worse. Started from basics pulled the coil of the horizontal plug and checked we had sparks with a spare plug. Yep got sparks, Hmm so put coil back on all secure. Tried a start went for the start button before the dash did its cycle then the dash blanked, backlit but nothing at all. Turned off and on a few times same result. Disconnected battery and reconnect. The dash lights cycle, the exhaust valve stepper motor cycles but no display.. Checked fuses in the left hand fuse box all good. Not shaping up well this.
I hope everyone can put their thoughts forward, I would be pulling that Datatool alarm off for starters (npi). It's too early to say as symptoms all over the place, but erratic dash readout can mean that (o.e.m. type) regulator is having it's final fit.
Ride it more? Ive never met a machine yet from a Robochef to a motorbike that likes sitting for years doing hehaw.
As above ride it It is said that you need to ride the bike a good 15 to 20 minutes to get the battery back to where it was before you started the bike Thats if the battery is a good one which I doubt yours is. Get a new battery Don't just replace the relays clean the terminals they plug into.
Yep had the datatool in my sights and the micro relays next. I forgot to state that it had a new battery with the cable set.
Checked micro relays all good, so onto the datatool alarm. Followed cables from the alarm, one group to the tail which will just be flashing the lights. 6 cables run toward the battery box, unpeel the tape near the box and find 2 unconnected, 2 breaking into the loom and 2 going on to fuse box which are probably power and lights. Unpeel the shrink of the 2 ends where they break into the loom and link together, restoring the original wire. Battery on, key and bang, instant start. So the datatool is the issue and is coming out. Just a note I have had 4 bikes, 3 fitted with datatool 4c red, 2 have failed. Draw your own conclusions. Much happier today. So now need to resolve the blank dash.. For the moment may just buy a gps speedometer.
Update - looking at the wiring the datatool had broken into the fuel pump line ( brown/white) hence why I had sparks but could not smell fuel - onwards...
So update - sent the dash up to a company who specialize in repairing dashes and quote the 848 dash on the website - good service but stated that the LCD was dead but could repair if I could locate a 2nd hand unit. Quick search revealed that these are £500 odd with no guarantee that they would work or be reliable so would rather pay £1000 for 2 yr warranty so had the unit sent back. In conversation the engineer mentioned that if the LCD was pressed the display came back on. Some research revealed the display type is 'Chip on Glass' with the driver IC bonded to the conductive tracks using a special conductive adhesive. It seemed to me that the chip bond may have failed. So long story short dismantled the dash, took out the LCD panel, bent up a clip to push the chip on the glass and all is now good - reassembled bike now running with the addition of a USB charge point in the tail courtesy of the wiring left from the removed alarm.
Glad you got to the bottom of it. I had the Reg Rec fail on my 848, only problem I ever had with it. Noticed from your original post that the bike was last serviced in 2014, are you running 8 year old belts? If they are that old I’d probably consider getting them changed, last thing you’d want is a failed belt
Thanks, I was chatting with a local mechanic who does Dukes and others - his experience was that if they look OK they will be alright - so pulled the cover of the horizontal cylinder and they looked brand new - however I have a set of belts from exactUK ready to go in this year. I just need to get the bike out of the garage as I have other jobs pending. I have also one S/S socket head bolt that has no home and cannot think where this was from. I had the front fairing off twice -still mystified.
Food for thoughts… https://bradthebikeboy.blogspot.com/2017/02/ducati-timing-belt-failures-and.html?m=1 https://bradthebikeboy.blogspot.com/2017/02/some-more-gates-belt-stuff.html?m=1
Update - my clip fixed worked for a while but eventually more of the display was missing or would randomly reappear. Sourced a complete 2nd hand dash unit and swapped the LCD screen from this to mine. This avoids any issue with dash / immobilizer recoding as the electronics for this are in the main board into which the screen ribbon cable plugs.
