I think given the price and level of finishing it was a bit of a bargain. I know they don’t have the same brand value of something like a Rolex but in terms of bang for your buck they make some impressive watches. Side note: I wanted a new watch to wear at my daughters wedding. I’d seen the Rolex Explorer II advertised, liked it and was in Covent Garden one day by the big watch shop. I approached the door and even though I was wearing a smart suit the doorman looked at me like I was going to drag dogshit into the shop. He finally let me in after querying why I didn’t have an appointment and passed me over to the saleswoman. I explained I’d recently sold my business, the wedding and liking the look of the Rolex and could I have a look at one. She practically laughed in my face, said they had none to look at and even if I wanted to buy one I’d probably have to wait at least 18 months. To be honest I can’t be arsed with this sort of bullshit, why bother advertising, limiting supply and creating a massive secondary market (I did some research afterwards) when you could simply increase production and prices and increase your profits? Seems like a better business strategy to a simple person like me. So whilst I’m sure Rolex are a nice watch I suspect you have to be a certain sort of person to put up with this. I expect once you’ve managed to buy your 5th Rolex they might treat you a bit better?
Maybe Rolex like the resale values, it’s a very good way to launder money. I know a fair few cash in handlers tradesmen business owners that buy Rolex watches as non visible savings. I’m talking large collections of them like 5 a year at least for at least 20 years.
Welcome to the world of Rolex, the Company with the best marketing department in the world! I've owned a couple of Rolex watches and like one or two of the models in their range but the brand is dead to me now due to what you experienced in your post above. It is all a game. Human nature always (mostly) desires what it can't have hence the pent up demand for their products as Rolex play this emotion very well. There are a lot of nice, high quality watch brands out there (& in stock) in the AD's. I'll be reaching a life milestone in the next couple of years (selling my business & taking early retirement (hopefully!!) and want to reward myself with a nice watch but it won't be a Rolex
Its only the last 3 or 4 years it been like this, I bought a Sea Dweller in 2017, there were other SS models available too of the shelf, Submariner etc... I'm sure with time the bubble will burst, like so many other fads. Its quite suprising how the value of their watches have increased on the SH market, mine for eg is fetching 2 1/2 its initial purchase price, not that im selling.
May I draw sirs attention to this tastefully expensive timepiece. https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Richa...MIr6qR57Cb9gIVDtTtCh3kywqvEAQYCCABEgKG2vD_BwE
I appreciate that it's very much a personal thing, but watches do nothing for me, never have, other than in my earlier days, when I used to bother to wear one. Owning and running a Ducati motorcycle is expensive enough!
I need to get a new strap for my navitimer after number 3 dog decided to eat the leather one at the weekend and im looking at getting a metal strap. Any do's and dont's with regards the finish to get/avoid please? Does one scratch less than the other for eg? Breitling Straps | Jura Watches
Are you setting more of a challenge by buying a metal strap or does Fido prefer metal straps over leather. You are aware that dog food is readily available and has better nutritional value than either leather or metal?
Hes not fussed what he sticks in his mouth (literally). Little shit's had a watch strap and my bose remote control in bits (beyond repair) in the last week. And thats before we go over the vile bits hes picked up on his walks.
I should have guessed there'd be a watch thread I used to have a bit of a habit for watches - more under control now I'd think... And the whole Rolex situation is farcical - although they're probably laughing all the way to the bank with the ridiculous market place they've created. It's a long way from when I picked up the Milgauss below duty free at the airport...
if you want to save some money until the dog stops chewing things I’d recommend these straps, very good quality and a damn sight cheaper! https://www.thestrapshop.co.uk/collections/stainless-steel-watch-straps
+1 for the Rolex thing. I don’t get the hype either. It seems like everyone I know wears a Rolex as well.
I do have my name down for a Rolex Explorer, but to be honest I have gone off it since putting my name down for it. If I do ever get a call from them I will inform them that my next watch will be an Omega Planet Ocean. Anyway I do not really like some of the Rolex names - Sea Dweller just reminds me of crustaceans like Hermit Crabs and Limpets Seamaster and Planet Ocean sound epic.
