  1. Damage report…

Where do I start  ???..you’ve probably all seen a bit on the news about the flooding in Brisbane, it was kind of scary but also exciting to be here when it was happening, torrential rain for 6 days and nights, it stopped yesterday so I managed to get out yesterday/ today to check out the damage and see if I’d still be able to get out on the bike path to the coast,…basically a lot of the bike path doesn’t exist anymore

Today’s weapon of choice is my trusty old Cannondale Jekyll mtb, 2003 vintage, it’s a bit like Trigger’s broom as there’s only the frame/fork that’s original, but some good kit been added to it, pointless trying to use the good road bike as there’s so much mud and rubbish lying about , the mtb was the right tool for the job :upyeah:

Seen here at the far end of the ride after all the devastation was over..

On leaving the house and working my way towards the coast,
This bridge has totally gone.. D623DB93-FBC9-4027-8880-DCF215383304.jpeg

The bit I’m stood on used to join up to the end of the bridge on the opposite bank, about 30 metres of bank and bike path has disappeared, you can see the bike path I use on the opposite side,…that’s buggered the job up then

Further along Kedron brook you can see how high up the water has been by the debris on a lamp post that managed to stay upright..
    B1AAF949-9992-4E0D-B585-499FB4E62948.jpeg

This must be 12 feet up the lamp post, the brook is normally about 10-12 yards wide, judging by the high water marks at the side of the banks it must have been 100 yards wide at it’s worst  !

This part of the bank and bike Path has also been washed away…
    D1283379-ADCE-41B5-9168-CB8815542088.jpeg

    About 60 - 70 yards of it has gone…

The bike path at Toombull was just covered in about 2 foot of sand and gravel, mtb managed to plough through it.. 28DDD6F3-56FF-49BE-9AE2-465F17EB7622.jpeg

About another 2 miles past Toombull shopping centre I just couldn’t believe my eyes..
    DD220BA9-2DB5-4116-9769-544507AB0239.jpeg

Somebody’s pride and joy Mustang had been washed away..

    35D9B04A-56CA-4C85-B5BF-8DBBC915B367.jpeg

Has seen some hellish force to bend the chassis/ door like that :astonished: !

    7448CED8-EC73-4709-897F-AA3F776AF226.jpeg

    It’ll polish out ,……..probably :D !!

    Clever bridge design..
    5D63992A-091D-4762-A93C-4B11EEC666C0.jpeg

Notice the hand rails are designed to collapse in the event of flooding to reduce the stress on the bridge itself  :upyeah:

From my 22 miles recce ride I’ve concluded that there’s no way I can ride the good road bike over about the first 10 miles of this route, and I don’t fancy doing it on the road as it’s too inner city traffic congested, so I’m gonna chuck it in the back of the car and drive out to a place called Nudgee beach and then just ride from there, not a big problem compared to what’s happened to some people, it’s been bloody devastating for some families, totally washed away poor buggers.

At least the sun’s back out and it’s amazing how fast it’s drying things up, laters people :upyeah:

  2. Blimey Poucher, that is devastating, glad your house is on higher ground, I take it. We’ve almost got our own weather news thread here now. Totally agree, re-: the Mustang, makes you think it dropped off from some height and landed hard on its tail, hard to think that that damage could be caused by an impact while “going with the flow” but I guess that is just as possible.

  5. Just to give you a bit of perspective here @Ducbird
    Before and after pictures…

Taken before the rains hit Brisbane…
    9CF320C0-5558-4050-A490-85C823C4C389.jpeg

Toombull shopping centre last week, the bike path runs you past here on my way out to the coast,
Take note of the height of the Armco barrier on lhs, how big the transit van is in relation to the columns and the height of the signposts..

Now after the rains have hit it for days..
    BE9520FF-2ECE-4BA2-992C-E75BC0B1C2D2.jpeg

The brook has gone from about 10 yards wide to probably 80 - 90 yards wide, it’s deposited about 2-3 feet of sand and gravel on the grass and walkway and the weeds are about 8 feet high up the signposts and Armco barriers.
The washed up Mustang I found was about a mile past this, so biggest part of a mile from any road !

Just as a side note, we have a little house guest in the bathroom…
    FEF7D437-C804-40D1-B38B-CBB3CEC2B662.jpeg

A little Geko, nobody minds them in the house over here as they do a good job eating fly’s and ants !

Might manage a spin on the bike tomorrow?…

15 miles on the cheatmobile with new battery which means I’m hardly even contributing a third now so that means 5 miles cycled

  8. Slowly getting back into it after a few weeks off with a nasty flu type thing - not CV19.
Had a steady ride around the local woods with my partner who enjoyed her first off road ride and has taken a liking to one of my mountain bikes! F5D10DE9-DDF9-4AAB-878E-F11CA467AA30.jpeg

  9. That’s how I lost my Pace RC300, she’d been quite content to amble around on her Halfords special until she took my Pace without permission.

  10. It is beneficial in that I can stop searching for another bike with a "nice looking frame in a pretty colour" and it also saves some space in the garage.
All I need to do if I want to ride it again is to swap seats and increase the pressures in the suspension to cope with my additional 25kg.

  19. A day trip to Scarborough….

No, not North Yorkshire, north Brisbane this time :upyeah:
At last the sun is back out after all that flippin monsoon type rain the last couple of weeks, so it was time to get the pushy back out :D
I’d been googling a decent coffee stop in Scarborough and found one called “ Sea salt and Vine” , that’ll do for me I thought, time to get clipped in…

Just to give you some idea where Scarborough is north of Brissy, the route I took was slightly different to this, so I thought I’ll crack on and get up there in one hit…
