BBC News - P&O cancels services and tells ships to stay in port https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60779001
Problems, suggest booking the Chunnel or others asap if you had plans of using P&O… https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/mar/17/po-ferries-halts-sailings-before-major-announcement
Mmmm, I wonder how that is going to affect the opposition. 3 years ago, Brittany Ferries had huge issues after an engine fire on one of their ferries at the same time 2 ferries were in for maintenance. If P&O are going to the wall, might be a life saver for the likes of BF. Andy
I wonder, IF it is that they are going bust...after covid has there been a downturn in bookings from hauliers due to Brexit red tape? Speculation but interesting times, especially as there are now no travel restrictions it would be this point forward where they could start to make money again..
"The leading UK ferry operator P&O Ferries has sacked its crew across its entire fleet after stopping all its sailings on Thursday. Unions called it a “scandalous betrayal”, and said about 800 jobs at all grades had been axed with no notice, with P&O planning to use cheap agency staff to operate its ships."
They claim that they are not going in to receivership so I wonder if they are moving their operations to mainland Europe? Either way 800 jobs are in jeopardy.
No surprise in P&O's behavior; shower of shite. I used to crew for them in the 90's and they viewed their crews with contempt. Fuckem. I'd rather row than step on one of their ferries.
Deborah meaden (her of dragons den fame) has just tweeted this For anyone looking for obvious links between DP World (P&O) and the Russian Government - Here is a web archive link to a URL that was mysteriously deleted on the 23rd February 2022. https://web.archive.org/web/20220223155341/https://rdif.ru/Eng_fullNews/1599/
Maybe it is linked. Interesting times. It could be that state ownership of or control of certain things may be prudent ?
We already have state ownership of certain things………it’s just that the state happens to be Russia it would seem
Tories were at one point close to funding Hinkley Point power station with Chinese government money….so, yes, state owned. Just the wrong states. UK has been bought and sold in recent years with scant regard for the countries security.
If the electorate has been able to see this going on for years how come successive UK governments haven’t? Oh yeah brown envelopes
At some point soon, maybe now is the right time, state ownership of key industries will need to be urgently looked at. Not in the old fashioned way, that maybe Corbyn was thinking (was he??) but to have control for the security of the country. Northumbrian Water ( I used to fish at their reservoirs) as an example bought by a Hong Kong based consortium. So an essential Utilities company, in the NE of England, in foreign ownership. Wether this all started with Thatcher and was accelerated under Blair...then recently Cameron and Boris, I dont know. But it is now obvious there is a problem!
