Still in Oz, Well after pigging out for a few days up in Maroochydore, I thought I’d better get out and do a few miles on the Pushy today,…well that was the plan Didn’t actually work out that way though…. Just over 10 miles in and disaster struck, forcing me to abort the ride and limp home… Only the Eagle eyed will spot this, you may have to zoom the picture up a bit,..can you see the problem
Disappointing MrP, you let a cable malfunction ruin a ride. You could have used the derailleur limit screws to get to a more sensible gear. You could even have dropped onto the (as fits your age) granny ring.
Correct ! The bloody rear mech cable snapped and the spring on the derallieur shot it up into the 11 tooth cog , so I only had two gears - big chainring and little chainring I know I could have fiddled it into the middle of the cassette and tied it off,..but I couldn’t be arsed ! Ended up tying the cable around the frame / bottle cage as it was fouling the chainring when I was riding, just so I could get back. Googled a bike shop in Brissy ( Tom Wallace cycles ) and he fitted a new cable for me and re- indexed the gears all for 42 dollars, about £25 quid , which I thought was pretty reasonable, normally I would have done it myself but I’ve got bugger all gear here ( decent cable cutters etc ) so I had the afternoon off and let a pro do it The cables been in 6 or 7 years and a good few thousand miles so I can’t complain
I figured it was rideable but it was in the smallest cog whilst parked up and that was pretty unusual... I've had a shifter fail mid ride so I couldn't change gear but at least that was in the middle of the cassette. £25 is a bargain
Not worth fiddling with the limit screws DS, you wouldn’t get it far enough into the middle of the cassette and then it’ll be a pain to reset, only took me about an hour and a quarter to find the bike shop so it worked out okay, and yes,…I did have to resort to the granny ring to get it up to speed, was quite cool in a way, bit like riding a single speed track bike
I know bud was just gentle ribbing, I’ve had easier gripes and sacked the ride off, it’s for enjoyment at the end of the day not a sufferfest. There’s always tomorrow’s ride to compensate for your disappointment today.
Yeah but it was a snapped cable and the rear mech springs just took it all one way, wondered what the hell had happened at first
Belting conditions for a 30 mile off road mountain bike loop this afternoon, even the summer gloves came out.... I'll drag full suss out tomorrow, I can't resist dry trails, winter miles, summer smiles
Shit, not good! Could you have pulled the gear cable under the chainstay to get to a smaller ring and wedged it tight somehow? At least you got a bike shop near.
Oh I remember those days when cables were pulled and released to change gears. Thats why SRAM invented their wireless AXS system.
Shimano Di2 electric on my other bike, set up on fully auto one shifter operation, that’s really good, I was a sceptic about electronic groupsets but that’s changed my mind. Never been a SRAM fan tbh ?
