Long shot probably, but as mine are currently in hibernation in other people’s garages I ask if anyone has access to an original lower shock bolt from an SS with the normal braced aluminium swingarm, and some sort of reasonably accurate measuring device? If so, please could you give me the spec and dimensions of the bolt? I know it is m10 but I’m particularly interested in the precise diameter of the unthreaded part the shock and swingarm pivot actually bears on, and the tensile grade, but while you are at it, it would also be useful to have the full info- head type, thread pitch, and the unthreaded section, threaded section, and overall lengths Thanks, Jon
Jon, M10 coarse is 1.5 pitch. Grade was 8.8 but 12.9 could be what you find more readily. Shank is 9.9 dia Hole 10.20 - 10.25 I plan to get a longer bolt and cut down, I think it's a toss up between 60 & 65 long to give a longer plain section. The 55 long bolt leaves some threads in the area where it supports the shock. I as going to do the same with top bolt. Cheers Gaz
I managed to bend one once by doing a few too many stoppies! Longer bolt with more plain shank is good engineering sense. Makes the oe look like just a cheap bodge.
Thanks @gaz92 Very useful. I am of the same opinion to replace with something more suitable than the OE.
Jon, Shank length needs to be somewhere between 31/32 and 39/40 or the nut will bottom out on thread before it is tight. Cheers Gaz
Thanks Gaz, I was considering using a 2mm washer either side and allowing the nut to just bottom out on the thread so that it is a floating 10mm pin rather than trying to pull the 2 bosses of the swingarm together as standard. It is a track bike so wear and road crud are not a problem.
Job, I will be honest I think it needs to be locked up. There is a thread from a while ago I will find it. 900ss Rear Shock. Search rear shock there are a few. I think other posts have said shim it and you can put on o-ring in to protect bearing. Sorry got length wrong before I think a 70 long Skt Hd Cap would do it. Cheers Gaz
