I have never tipped for new tyres on anything. But if I have had to go to my local garage and they have say pumped up my tyres yep always had them checked before a long ride I always gave them a fiver. As for restaurant work it's busy for little money and tips do make a difference. I worked where we had to pool tips ( kept some of mine) buggered if I'm sharing with the lazy ....... Any service I'm given where the person has been great always gets a tip from me but I always personally give it to them so the sneaky management don't bags it
No bugger's ever tipped me. And why should you tip someone just for doing what they're paid to do? No, tips should be reserved for people who have gone out of their way to either do a good job or save you money/time.
Maybe that's why he appreciates it when I give him a tip. I don't think it's standard practice here either which makes it all the better. That's what tips are for: you're appreciation of them going the extra mile. Crappy job being a tyre fitter. Tough on the back. Not much job satisfaction. What goes around.... I bet I benefit in the long run for paying my tyres 2.5% more than I have to.
I rarely tip taxi drivers, I figure I will never see them again, if it is local I would use a bus or get a lift from a friend, so I would only use one if I was desperate in London, but I usually use the tube. I usually do tip waiting staff as my youngest has allergies and they have to be quite up on what they are serving so they can advise us, if they get it wrong he will be sick and then it is really embarrassing to have to clean it up.
Well I love tips, but I am biased working in hospitality and all that. Funny as many people receiving tips complain about how small it was and how greedy that bastard is. I always lived by rule any tip is good tip and that way I end-up better off then bitching moaners. £1 an hour gives me untaxed 12 pounds a day so it pays for petrol. I do give tips in restaurants/bars/hotels if service was good or if waitress was hot (service might not be as good but my lower brain takes over) but only cash in hand as I know that most places "share tips". By share manager gets for example 40% for being at home, supervisor gets 20% for being in the office while remaining 40% is divided amongst 10-15 staff members. I did leave tip in other places in past but only if I felt I was not ripped off in first place or service was way beyond what was expected. I never ever will leave a tip to taxi driver in London. £60 for 12 mile ride. Sorry but petrol and other costs for said trip could not be more then £30.
Tip for tyre fitter - "Don't scratch the paint on my wheels!" Tip for Taxi driver - I think I did last time, which was abroad on holiday and over 10 years ago. Tip for waiter/ress - happy to go along with whatever the friends I am with are doing, but if it was down to me - probably not.
More often than not I'll tip waiting staff, mostly because I know how poorly paid they are. But they still have to do the job well to earn the tip. Taxi drivers sit on their arses all day (or do it as a second job), most earn more than me, and very few of them display any elevated skill at their job. So, no, I don't tip them often. On the other hand...The local milkman knew my back door was open to him, and would help himself to tea and toast, he also got a decent tip every xmas. Why? Because he always did his job well, more often with a smile than a frown, he employed most of the local street urchins when everyone else just wanted them locked up, and his local knowledge and keen eye even helped the police on occasion. He was an asset to the local community. He deserved every tip.
I will bung the guy at my car garage a tip as he often says no charge. I will tip waiting staff, beauty therapists , Hairdressers. As an ex barmaid I really really appreciated tips , its not so much the amount but the fact you have been noticed or done a good job.
