Hi, I am about to pull the trigger on a new but 21 model v4s panigale. I had a 2018 one last year and although I loved it when working, every ride it cut out on me, mainly pull the clutch in rolling and it cut out. Enough so, I had enough and sold it. I had it serviced, updates, ride home was better but still cut out again rolling up to a traffic light. But I just wish it worked properly hence me looking at a new one. Is this a common issue as it is making me reluctant to buy another but they are such fantastic bikes I’m torn. Have they improved it for 2021? Anyone else experienced this and fixed it? I look forward to any advice.
Was your old bike standard or had it been mapped? My standard 2018 bike hasn’t cut out like you describe ever.
Hi, Thanks Razz. It was completely standard. But good to hear you have had no issues. Hopefully a few more chime in to reassure me, I said I’d put a deposit on it tomorrow morning. The other thing is has anyone re-calibrated to 200/55 rear? Does it affect the handling in any way? Just gives me a bit more choice tyres in the colder months.
My 1199 does the same thing and so does my mates Hypermotard. Mine sometimes cuts out when coming to a stop for no reason, it’s really annoying but starts up again no problem though
My 2017 1299 base model has been known to cut out for no apparent reason, a few times when pulling the clutch in when going round a roundabout or when coming to a stop and when just sat still. Funnily enough it hasnt happened for about a year and then tonight when I pulled up outside my house it cut out. Its pretty annoying but I understand its a pretty common thing. Oh and mine isnt mapped and the only mods are Akrapovic end cans and a K&N air filter.
Had the obligatory gear position sensor go on my '20 base... but easy fix...other than that, rock solid through 6000 miles.
You need to invest in an engine remapping. These things are setup for euro 5-6 regulations. After a good remap with a specialist the bike comes to live and cut outs are history. I let it done to every Duc I have and had. Makes drive ability so much better.
Totally different bike, but this happens with my 1198S from time to time. No rhyme or reason to it, seems to happen at random (but usually rolling up to a stop). About the only thing I haven't tried is a re-map.
My late 2021 one has had the engine management light for over 400 miles of the 550 mi,es overed so far, it also looses track of what gear its in and the traction controller, abs, etc all fails. It runs OK, I.e. does not cut out. I wish I never bought it, had zero troubles with the 1299s it replaced. I can only comment on its story's far, hope the first service and software upgrade flagged up will make me like and trust it.
I recently did the tyre calibration on my 2019 V4S as I wanted to try the TD Slicks which only come in that profile. It was super easy to do (enter the correct mode on the dash & then ride at 30mph for 5 seconds) & the bike ran great on them with no noticable (to me!) change in handling.
I've had my 2021 for 2 rides so far and it's been faultless apart from the cutting out you speak of when rolling to a stop at lights (this only happened once) ..no engine or exhaust mods... my 999s did far worse and my 1098R throttle got stuck open once so there are defo worse traits.. didn't happen yesterday and hit a shed load of lights on my 3.5 hours in the saddle with no issues... Will keep an eye on it but it shouldn't stop you buying one, afterall most of the jap stuff have shite brakes/ABS systems that try to kill you, I'll take stalling at lights once every few rides
Oh god I hope I don’t start having issues with mine. Just about to pick it up, I thought these were pretty reliable nowadays
I had same sort of issue on my 999 some years ago, eventually it solidified and that Genius Eddie Stone traced it to a bad connection at the petrol pump in the tank. I've heard one or two other problems of this sort including other makes. I'm thinking Ethanol in petrol at this stage and how it is always going to be premium fuel I use..
Cheers, after all the comments, I decided I am sitting tight on another V4S as fantastic as they are, it’s a lots of money to be having doubts… and I got swayed on Sunday by another 1198S which was an easy decision as they are one of favourite Ducati’s ever ( well non R’s favourites ), already got it booked in for a remap at BSD Performance Peterborough
So obviously did quite a bit of YouTube.. ing, Googling etc and there is a thing with the gear sensor or something but it’s no big thing and will be sorted at first service so don’t worry and enjoy it. There is a chap on YouTube who had the same thing and easily resolved. If it wasn’t for this 1198s I bought I would be still tempted to get new v4s just because of how awesome they are
Both my panigales cut out on the move. Reliability wise they where fine as well. Nothing more than minor niggly issues that got sorted
