Once the electrical ignition feed is stopped the motor will stop spinning once the compression force is greater than the kinetic force of the crank. Eff all to do with where your break the electrical ignition feed.
You are indeed correct, even down to the same serial number stamped on the belts, supplied by Gates belts, the only difference was the Ducati logo markings. To that end each set of belts cost around £22.00 as opposed to the Ducati pricing of around £75.00 a set. I therefore didnt have a problem changing the belts every 2 1/2 to three years but not once did ant of the belts i removed show any signs of damage. By way of interest, the "aftermarket" belts used on 900ss also belong to a make of whacker plate for road repairs! I do have the serial number somewhere, Again manufactured by Gates belts, the early Ducati belts didnt even had the gates logo on them! BTW 4 Ducati's 0 broken belts
That's good info. Which model/year and which engine? Or do you have a part number because there are a lot of different engines in the Clio over the years?
I've always understood that using the kill switch earths out the coils, which is not an advisable habit to get into.
Because using the kill switch cuts the fuel pump and ignition in exactly the same way the key does. 100% ball locks.
Takes 20-30mins to change the belts on my 600 Monster. Zero labour costs, so for the sake of 50 quid every 2 or 3yrs I'm happy to replace them, even if the old ones look ok it's peace of mind that's more important. Agree that it's scare stories mostly about the belts, and even then, every case is individual. Who knows if the bike sat for a year or had a bodge mechanic set the tension wrong. All you hear is a belt snapped.
Its the Gates part number - 5192XS for the 1.2 & 1.4 petrol Clio. I have used these for a few years now, no worries
I saw a cracking 600 by me ... he's owned it ten years and only takes it out to get MOT'd id have loved it. He has not changed the belts in ten years !!!! I nearly wept. Im paranoid mine are now both coming up to 2 year change..... I bet if I left mine one week over ping... crunch dead Monster Id rather have belts then a Kawasaki cam belt ever again !!
For sure there is a substantial safety margin built in to the recommended change interval but the consequences of having one snap are far beyond engine damage - Even a partial engine lock up could have you off and then its the whole bike that could be totalled and maybe you too. After all, most of us prefer wearing substantial safety gear "just in case". Why take the chance?
Kill switch cuts the power to the ignition/injection in the same way that the key does, only thing the key does extra is to cut power to the lights etc.
sorry to hijack the thread but I'm looking at a ST4S at the moment, the owner is claiming that he's had it from 2,000ish miles in 2003 and he has never changed the belts (currently at 15,000 miles). I'm a bit wary of the bike for this reason. I don't mind swapping the belts myself, its not that difficult a job really and I will be swapping a load of bits for the project but I'm still nervous, should I be?
er I would be hesitant if someone can't be arsed to change belts for ten years hardly screams well cared for
I would say if the rest pans out don't rule it out. I bought a bike once that had been standing a while and just changed the belts immediately and then set about the rest of the bike after I was satisfied it was running right.
