1199 Technical Question

  1. 2 actually;
    1) Just got my bike back from the shop and they advised she smokes a lot (via exhausts) when you first fire her up. W/o knowing much else they’ve suggested it’s possibly/probably the valve stem seals. I explained only had her 6 months and due to winter barely ridden but yes she does smoke but once warmed up it stops. Took her a thrash tonight and same thing, plenty smoke for first few mins (as I put helmet and gloves on) but then zip, and certainly nothing when I pulled in 60 miles later. Not questioning the dealer, as we agreed I’d ride her and see if it continues/if just a lack of use issue but what do you guys think, any other suggestions? Would valve stem seals only allow oil to pass during warm up, would they expand/seat once engine up to temp perhaps thus explaining problem going away?

    2) looks like there’s meant to be a cover over the top of battery? Only see a CF one of eBay, which is fine I guess, but are screws meant to hold it in place on right side of pic as eBay one doesn’t appear to have holes? Anyone know a part or have one they want to sell?

  2. For #2, there is a plastic cover which mounts on the two holes on the right of your picture. There is also a plastic bar that holds the battery secure in place. See pictures which have part numbers I think.

    Can't help with #1

  3. Worn valve stem seals will allow oil to move into the combustion chamber when the bike sits for awhile. This initially small amount of oil accumulation is then burnt off after a restart, resulting in a blue smoke exhaust.

  4. Thanks Shazaam.
    Sounds like that’s the issue then, although worn at under 4k miles is a little surprising. Bike won’t be sitting much now summer is here so hopefully not an issue. Is it a big deal and something I need to address urgently or can keep an eye on oil levels and just deal with at service?

  5. I had a Ferrari that did the same thing. Never got worse. Never did fix it.

  6. worth a quick visual check inside the airbox/frame to see if there is any oil deposit there

  7. If its a early 1199 then smoke on start up was common, my 12 plate did it and I was concerned at the time, sure there is a thread on here about it.

  8. Don't get a carbon fibre cover for your battery, carbon is conductive.

  9. Cheers Petsmith, I've ordered a stock plastic piece, although when I was talking CF I meant for the top cover piece, not the part that actually holds the battery in place. You don't recommend that either?

  10. Definitely smoke on start up I had and still have a very early 1199 done it from new and still smokes initially and its only done 2000 miles saw plenty of new ones going out the shop do exactly the same

  11. If it's clear of the battery poles it's all good.

  12. Depends on the smoke, but panigales can smoke on cold start. All mine have done it now and then.
