1200 Removing The Rear Exhaust Headers

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Desmophil, May 21, 2022.

  1. I am looking to remove the exhaust header manifolds to get my system cerakote so it does not rust.

I have managed to remove the front, not problem

I have managed after much swearing, removing the shock, etc to remove 2 of the rear bolts. Top one and right one. There is no access from the top with much in the way of looms / battery / and ohlins suspension. But anyhow I got to those.

Now comes the job of the left one. impossible to reach from the back because the way the manifold bends, you cannot get the straight line with a long reach rachet and you end up rounding the bolt as the socket cannot sit square to it.
No way of getting to it from the side even with a gnome spanner because there are the frame spars right in the way.

    How do you do it??

Please don't tell me that it is another marvel of engineering where it is an engine out jobby to get to this??

I thought that the MTS was much more accessible for jobs after complaining for years about the idiocy of the ST4s fairings. Way too much in the way to my liking. I think that I will stay with old bikes that were so much simpler to work on.

    Any help welcomed!

  2. I’m just about to leave home with my girlfriend to pick up her new bike but if no-one else has an answer by the time we get back, I’ll try and copy the relevant text from the service manual I have on CD. Andy

  3. Thank you

  4. I have actually found a 2015 workshop manual. It looks like a different manifold (mine is 2012).
They do not really give any tips in there, just mention that you remove the screws with a nice picture of the engine without any rear subrframe, etc.
Looks like on the 2015, it is the top nut mount that would be hard work to do. On the earlier model, I cannot really figure how to access the bottom left one.

  5. Not sure this is gonna help but when I swapped mine out for the termignoni system it was as simple as undoing the 4 nuts and pulling it off. BTW, a universal joint on a socket extension will help.
