I already have a Panigale R And a Hypermotard SP But the hankering continues to plague me. Now I’m looking at 916s, but I’ve seen a very high-milage(36000) , cosmetically-scraped 1098S at £5K. Poor service history. Low-speed drop at trackday. Belts need doing. Will someone tell me plainly how stupid I’d be to go and look at it, please?
No good asking me, I'd say go for the project and feel lucky you found it. The bike sounds to be in a similar position to my 999 when I collected it, except for the mileage, and that's been a great experience rebuilding it. This will put you off or make you more excited about it. https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/project-999.87890/
Thanks. Difference between us is I don’t have the room to take the thing to pieces. But at that price, it’s tending to override my caution about service history, trackday treatment (esp. gearbox) , possible frame damage, milage…
Must be a bug... probably a couple of braincells starting their own business... I started with zero Duc's one year ago.. now 996S, 900SSi and a MTS 1100S, YOLO!
Not worth £5k IMO and it will be a money pit. You'll put way more into it than a kosher bike would be worth let alone a dog Andy
I have bought a few "CAT N" insurance bikes and can tell you now that the damage is always a lot more than expected. I used them all for trackday bikes, they are money pits.
Nose cone scrape-holed, rh lower fairing too, seat unit rh taped up. Can’t see rh foot peg (aftermarket, so may be bent) Thanks folks, for the sanity. I’ll continue looking for the mythical 916 for £5K! bargain
It’s a shame you haven’t got room to take apart or assemble as there is someone within these fair pages that might be offloading a 916 almost full “kit” sometime this year, and I know the price will be fair. Chap will remain anonymous until ready though.
This 100%, having recently rebuilt/restored my 1098 (which is only on 8500 miles and was very clean to start with) after a drop I can confirm it will end up costing you significantly more than buying the most mint, dry weather only, low miles, full history garage queen you can find.
