996 Heavy Misfire Below 6k

  1. Evening gents,

been enjoying my cheapo 996s I snagged and it’s been absolutely faultless, until now :grinning:

I have developed a substantial misfire below 6000rpm which clears on hard throttle and high rpms. Below 6k it stutters and stammers like a bastard to the point my wife can hear it above her 748 when behind me . I also get lean sneezing back through the trumpets .

Is there any usual suspect to check on these ? I would suspect and failing injector or pump would get worse with high rpms rather than better ?

here are the plugs. Left hand plug in the pics is front cylinder.

  2. Ok I’m the mean time I’ve stolen Mrs Slingy’s 748 tank and misfire is gone ! So, either I’ve disturbed bad plug lead while checking plugs, or the pump/wiring on my tank is duff. More investigation required !

  3. Look at the fuel pipes in the tank, they tend to split

  4. recently done (well a few months back), although that’s not to say they haven’t failed again. The first genuine Ducati set swelled and failed within a month despite using E5 only. I then replaced them with proper impervious hose a few months ago. Will put my tank back on tomorrow and see if misfire returns. If it does I’ll pull the pump and check hoses ..again

  5. You might need a TPS reset:thinkingface:.

  6. it’s on my to do list, but don’t think it’s the issue at the moment. Fault stopped when I swapped tanks over earlier so either pump, hoses or wiring plug is fubar

  7. I think all 12 of your plugs look good.

  8. I’d be surprised if it was the culprit (but you never know) but you did clean out the gauze screen filter underneath the fuel pump didn’t you?

  9. Check you have not got air leaks between the throttle body and the cylinder head, plugs look like it’s running weak.

  10. I haven’t had a chance to dig further yet. After swapping wife’s tank over it seemed to run fine, I didn’t do many miles though so could have still had an issue. I then swapped my tank back over and it’s running significantly better with the occasional splutter.

I’m waiting for the carbon tank to return from lining so will swap pump over then and go through filters and replace hoses (again) with some proper stuff I got from Demon Tweaks.

I will have a look when I swap tanks back over as soon as I get the call to say it’s ready. :)
