My M1200s has had what I think is a problem with the fuel gauge from new but Ducati seems to think it's okay. So can I ask any late M1200 owners (probably apply to 821's as well) to do a little experiment for me. Can you full your tank and ride the bike as normal and when you get 1 bar of fuel used (about 50 miles) can you refill and see if the gauge resets to full, then can you do it again when the gauge drops to 2 bars used. Thanks in advance.
does seem to have slipped through the net mjgt.. mine is an R and doesn't even have one. Have you tried same question on UKMOC? - i have a hunch you and i shared a tunnel run organised by Rob some years back..
Thanks Chris, I have the only 1200s with a fuel gauge on that forum as well. I haven't been on a tunnel run with anyone, so it ain't me.
I don't have a Monster, I have a Multistrada and saw a very similar issue. I needed to get a fuel sender reset done by a dealer which fixed the issue. Fuel gauge senders on all Ducati's are shite. They fail regularly and when they do work - it's still hit and miss.
I have had 4 mutleys; my current one (2019 1260S) plus two previous ones had issues with the fuel gauge sender. The current one works intermittently but spends most of the time showing completely empty and with the fuel warning light flashing. Doesn't affect fueling/riding (other than a mild irritation), just means keeping an eye on the trip. Although out of warranty Ducati have provided a replacement sender unit FOC so will have it fitted some time soon. Seems to be a common issue - not sure if this is the same as your problem tho'.
My 2019 had a new sender prior to a recent 1,000 mile trip. Previous to its replacement, it acted as above, mainly showing empty. Now it's new, it shows full, half empty after 2 miles, 3/4 full after 100 miles, 1/4 full after 160 miles, full again after 180 miles. Basically, they don't work.
Thanks for all your input, I've had 3 senders, 1 dashboard, 2 black boxes (they're actually called black boxes) and no end of software updates and now that Ducati can't fix it they are telling me I don't have a problem.
As mentioned by others above ^ , it's a common problem , across many models . If you type " fuel gauge " into the search box at the top of the page , it will pull up some previous posts ..... don't know how far back in time it will go , but there are plenty . That's another common problem ( mainly found with arrogant dealers ) ......
To be fair, not many owners have senders which can be confirmed as accurate, so the experiment isn't something which would prove or disprove anything IMHO. The other issue is we ride for fun, so can't plan a route where refuelling at 50 miles then 100 miles is guaranteed.
Sad to say, many Ducati owners eventually ignore the fuel gauge/countdown display and rely on the trip mileage. My Multistrada low fuel light routinely illuminates with about 9 litres left in the tank and is the trigger for me to look for a fuel stop. Hopefully it's something you can live with as I know the M1200 is an enjoyable bike to ride. Andy
I don’t agree. Basically everyone has told you that your fuel sender unit is crap. Which leaves you with one option, to harangue Ducati until you get some satisfaction. I had a problem with the low fuel light coming on when it shouldn’t. Fortunately my bike is completely analogue so when I replaced the fuel filter I took the sender unit to pieces, cleaned it and reassembled it. Job done.
