749 Steering Head Bearings

  1. New steering head bearings? My front stand goes on the bottom of the forks, how do people hold their bike up to change steering head bearings?

  2. I used a couple of builders trestles with a length of 2x6 timber across them and used a ratchet strap around the frame behind the headstock to hang it from the Timber.
I've used that method on lots of bikes.

I use an under headstock stand for everything else, but as you say, you can't remove the bottom yoke that way.
I use one with a pin by the way, having drilled a 10mm hole in the bottom yoke, not a cup type.

  3. Scaffolding poles across the rafters and ratchet straps on the frame.

  4. Trolley jack and a block of wood under the motor/frame
I also have one of these which is even better, though mine has adjustable pillars :)

  5. I could never agree with supporting the weight of a bike on the underside of the cast Aluminium engine cases.
Have you seen how thin they are in places?

  6. To add, I also use an Abba as it holds the weight in the middle, which helps.

  7. That's why you use a wooden chock to spread the load. Never harmed any of my bikes and I have done this on lots.

  8. ABBA type stand and lots of blocks of timber. Or, straps through frame and onto garage rafter. Or both for extra peace of mind.

  9. Bursig stand.

  10. For the uninitiated, ie myself.

How do the stands like Abba and Bursig react when you remove a significant weight from one end of the bike, like say the complete front end including forks, yokes etc?

Do the bike and stand constantly need to be moved or balanced?

  11. For the Abba, some weight will remain on the front wheel but greatly reduced. You can get a kit to lift the front but I just strap to the roof.

  12. Makes no difference on the Bursig. It lifts with one pin and stops pivoting with another.
