'Woke'. The term used by the right to try to invoke some 'humerous' conflict with someone. This is not a dig at you Mary. Just an observation on the term. Apparently, being nice or decent to people who belong to various groups is being 'woke'. There was I thinking I was just being polite and friendly. I'm also apparently a liberalist and an extreme left wing commie. Just because I say Hi and support people who are being bullied or oppressed by a white minority of halfwitted hatists. Who knew? I shall have to annex a part of some state. Oh wait, thats the white minority projecting again isnt it? Crumbs.
Stephen Fry has done lectures on this and how he finds ‘woke’ and cancel culture disturbing. Not sure I’d call him right leaning…
That was entirely my point Brad. Being a decent human being is apparently 'woke' to a certain group of people. Stephen was referring to those on the far left in those lectures, whom in my opinion are as bad as the right. Fundementally it all boils down to some people feeling they have a right to tell other people what to do or what to think. I'm centre left (ish). Personally, I feel that if you find yourself on the wings then you need to take a hard look at your beliefs. (Esp if youre the pilot)
Woke isnt about being nice and giving people the space to do whatever they like: it’s about enforcing language and behaviour on others Trans is a perfect example. As is slavery. Example, suggest people have been slaves from every race and creed for over 1000 years and you’ll be met with accusations of downplaying the slavery from 400 yrs ago that lasted 100 years or so where Africans were shipped all over the place (especially south and North America) and abused and being some kind of right wing, white supremist racist. Which clearly you’re not. But that doesn’t matter to the woke brigade.
Yes Brad, but its relatively recent, some are still alive or the children of those slaves are and the effects are still being felt. Suggesting what you say, detracts and almost dismisses the recent slavery. Why point that out whilst in a discussion? Thats like the all lives matter thing. Yes, all lives do matter. But it is the black lives that are currently under threat. So what if people want to be trans? Let people be who they want to be. Oh and we are all currently indentured slaves. We get a paltry allowance to feed and home ourselves but we are still at the mercy of the man. People are underpaid and overpaid. What fucking good is a footballer when you need medical care? Pay the nurses more, pay the train drivers, the truckers, the shop workers, pay everyone more. Or make a more balanced and equitable society. No fuck that, I want 3 cars in the drive and a piss up in spain, a new phone that does exactly what the old one did, just with more glitter.
"woke" in it's current use, can't be pinned down easily, to me it's bandied around right now by some people just because of it's high usage, just because they can, but it's only going to lead to more confusion as it's taken on several guises - best not to use the term at all.. Tis true, it’s a hard term to nail down and define. The BBC are often referred to as woke. I’m assuming this is because they over expose things like womens football, womens cricket, womens fucking anything… and then non stories from black people, not so much Asians from the sub continent but preferably stories from black folk. Then there’s the LGBT stories, women wanting to be blokes and blokes wanting to be women. Basically a lot of shite the vast majority of people aren’t interested in. But it MUST be rammed down our throats at all costs to make us nicer people Apparently.

Totally agree on that point. Leicester (that's a few miles south of Derby. In Leicestershire) is rampant with modern day slavery. But let's not go there. It'll make the BBC very nervous....
Sorry but this is simply wrong. Modern slavery across the Middle East is still a major issue. Granted they don’t stick them on ships in horrendous conditions (well many get stuck in containers and shipped around the world…) instead many are ‘imported’ as workers but paid less than it costs to live. Look at the Saudi stadiums, allegedly hundreds of Pakistanis buried in there. And the reason I use as an example is that you only ever hear of it was white man steals black man: when black man sold black man to white and black man and white man (and whatever colour you wish to use for Middle East) bought anyone from anyone as long as price right. But this is just an example, that you’ve proven, of false equivalence: pointing out you are not the only victim does not detract from you being a victim, and it can add context. Nor does it make someone racist. Re trans, again, what someone identifies as is entirely their choice: but surely accepting that is also the choice of others? Personal opinion is live and left live. The most oppressed minority, who are actually majority, are women. Of every colour. Every creed. And that is something that needs to be minded all the time. I think to say we are all slaves is devaluing the lasting effects tho. Having to work to live isn’t slavery: it’s life
