96-97 900ss Price Guide?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Mark19271, Jul 11, 2022.

  1. Hi All,

I am looking for a 900ss and wondered if anyone could give me some sort of guide on value in the current market? My budget it £5k ish, would that get me something decent? I’m not an investor or speculator, just love classic 90’s bikes and have my heart set on a Supersport. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

  2. IMO you should get a very tidy and original SS or a decent but not perfect SL for that.
The bumped up prices you sometimes see are often not realistic and don’t reflect the final sales price by a good margin.

  3. Thanks Jon. I’ve not followed the prices of the Supersports but guess they have gone like most classic motors over the last few years. I have seen some in eBay dealers at £7k which seems eye watering! That’s why I wanted to try here first and buy from someone who has loved it, not just polished a turd and put a £3k profit on it! I have asked about with my network up here too, hopefully something will turn up.

  4. Bumped into this guy on Sunday (I know you shouldn’t use you phone on a petrol forecourt, but couldn’t resist!). It was immaculate and unsurprisingly not for sale ☹️. He paid £1100 for it 10 years ago…

  5. Hello welcome to the forum.
I’ve been looking at the prices for a while, I’ve seen a few very nice 750ss for around 3-3500, another one had a complete rebuild and was up for £3995 and was on eBay for around 7 months,
With the 900ss I’ve noticed that any of them priced 4K and above go on and off eBay for a good few months and a few are still on there even the ones at 5k and above stay on for a long time and that’s if they ever sale but as mentioned those prices are just the advertised price what it ends up as who knows.
Early white ones seem to sale around 4K+ But I’ve not seen one advertised at 5k, they are 1990/92 and have around 30k+ miles,
As you know with all bikes go take a look and the better condition then general cost a bit more, for your budget I would think you will find a very good low mileage one,
Let us all know what you get and if unsure about one ask on here as plenty have good knowledge on them which is super helpful.

  6. Thanks for the reply Roadtrip. There are a few 900’s for sale but no later models that I can see at the minute. I haven’t looked at the 750’s to be honest, are they as good as the 900’s to ride? Your pricing makes sense, eBay asking prices don’t equal the value of the bike! Hoping for a later model in the best condition but not fussed on low mileage as I intend to ride it, not hang it on the wall! I have learned through bitter experience not to buy the cheapest and fix it up, always costs more than a good one in the end and worth less! I will certainly share whatever I manage to get and thanks for the offer of advice.

  7. I can’t answer what each are like to ride as I’ve never ridden either one as have just got my 900ss the main reason I wanted a 900 is the dry clutch I really like the noise.

  8. Mark,
As others have you should get a decent one for the money you have, but in my opinion information is power. I think if you go and have a look at some you will quickly get a feel for prices, you can't really tell from pictures.
But you may see some potential in a scruffy low mileage one rather than high milage mint one.
Anyway just my thoughts, good luck and welcome.

    Cheers Gaz

  9. The 750 is something of a sweet spot, the 900 has the dry clutch and the prestige but the 750 revs and is not really slower in the real world.

    Don’t discount the 750, they’re lovely.

  10. I'm based in Sussex / Surrey and have travalled down to Cornwall & upto Leeds for two motorbikes, it's not a problem if the seller provides the photographs and answers ALL the questions, good luck in finding the right one 4 you.:upyeah:

  11. I know the 750 has the steel swing arm and narrower wheel / tyre. Is that it bar the power?

  12. £4K should certainly get you a nice one, that doesn’t look bad. Obviously a yellow one would be preferable but that looks pretty clean. Myself I’d be looking to buy from a specialist or a marque aficionado.

Doesn’t mention the belts or Desmo service (noting the mileage). Belts are 24 months or 12k miles and Desmo service is 6k intervals I believe… if I’m off on those then I’m sure someone will correct me.

At the money they’re asking you should expect the bike to run perfectly (including coming back to idle easily, not sort of hanging around at higher revs), rust in the rear lower corners of the tank, full and timely service history, any oil leaks and any engine paint lifting / corrosion. Cush rubbers in good shape and all bodywork complete (inc. rear seat cowl) and in perfect condition. Buy on condition.

  13. Pretty much, some bikes have single front disc brake too.

The steel swinging arm isn’t always a bad thing, the alloy ones need to be checked carefully for cracks. Other things worth considering (earlier bikes especially) are checking for cracks in the frame around the headstock.

  14. Thanks Gaz
