Well, a bit of a frustrated conversation here. I am fairly young and up to 5 years ago, I thought to be healthy too. I won’t bother you with any long story, but I ignored for too long the advices my cardiologist gave me and continue to gives me. His prescription is always the same, reduce stress and have a much healthier lifestyle. It took me months to understand I cannot continue to cover my role at my current job as it involves daily stress. Long story short, we will be moving to Spain where my wife is from. She can transfer internally and I will find something else. Unfortunately, not the job I love. Now the hard part: from what I read, Spain is not very friendly with imported motorbikes and registering them over there is a bit of a nightmare. Add up that one of my ss, although extremely looked after and with low miles, it’s on a Q plate (stolen-recovered) and has a DVLA given vin number, i believe this one is out of the game straight away as won’t be considered to be registered over there. I really don’t want to sell her but I see no alternative, unless someone can share their experience with registering a fairly old motorcycle in Spain without an official Ducati VIN number or, someone can come forward with a 900 ss frame with V5, then I may be putting both of them up for sale and buy once there (if I will ever find one as there aren’t that many). While the Q plate runs like a dream and doesn’t burn any oil ( she is truly spotless ) the 96 has a re-welded frame at the headstock (common) and burns oil, and seems to have a leak between the vertical cylinder and cylinder head (typical) although compression is equal on both cylinders and pulls very well. On this one there is a fully comprehensive, from day one, service history. We will be moving fairly soon so I can’t really sleep on this. Below, the young girls
Hi Joe Great pair you have there i do like a white frame, Could you maybe sale the 96 and take the white one to Spain with you and don't register it until you do find a frame from the UK or if very lucky Spain or even France, Good luck with the move I'm sure it will be great and stress free I know @Mark19271 is looking for a late 900ss
i thought about everything. My wish is to keep both of them but in reality it simply won’t work. I could keep the white frame and search for a frame when I am there, I am keeping this as an option. From the information i had, it will be very hard. It will also have to be a 91 frame as otherwise it will fail the registration process. As far as I understand, the bike has to be all original and respecting the livery and specs of the age. Ok addition and to add more damage, if any younger than 30 years and therefore not classified as historical, it simply cannot be registered. What a joke! thanks guys, still hoping in a miracle which is someone selling a 900 frame with papers or someone else who has been through this and can advise. Selling is truly the last thing I want but I see myself almost forced.
Blimey thats going to be bloody hard to find a 91 frame, why does it have to be that strict i thought it would be the same as in the UK, any 900ss frame would do,
i know. Or also, if they would have accepted applications for bikes younger than 30 years, I could have registered and use the 96 but as it is, I would need to wait 4 years before I could even attempt to register.
Have you posted this up on the Facebook groups? Wealth on knowledge on there too. Sorry to hear of your situation
Joe, Sorry to hear of your situation. I am sure you have looked at most thing, just done a search - can you contact a specialist company, maybe they have a solution. Found this one but sure there are others. https://vehicleregistrationscostadelsol.com/ Sorry if no good - best of luck. Cheers Gaz
I hope someone on here picks up on this plight and can help as regards vehicle transfer to Spain, I wish you the very best, you are certainly in my thoughts Joe. @Sev
Maybe widen the search to a European registered frame? They definitely do come up here in France. In theory registering a vehicle from another part of Europe is completely straight forward.
Hi sorry to hear about your dilemma, I might be able to help. I have a friend who lives in Spain and has several vehicles still on UK registration. He just pays road tax every year and whenever he brings the vehicle over to the UK he gets an MOT. If you want I get some more details off him. Hope this helps.
Guys thank you so much for your help. Again, any tip will be appreciated. Ideally I would like to keep them both and find the way around it, but sometimes you need to accept that some things are the way they are and you can’t change it. I will look into possibly registering them in Italy and maybe like you are saying, it will be easier. I still don’t understand though why Spain refuses to register any vehicle younger than 30 years. Basically, they only allow you to register a 30+ historical motorcycle and not any younger. I thought about running them on British plates but unsure this will attract the police attention.
I'm moving to Spain later this year too. Check this out: https://www.spain-help.com/advices-useful-topics/forced-change-car-plate-spain/
From what I can read, bikes with less than 30 years can be turned down due to emissions and euro 3-4-5 compliance. There won’t be any way to know whether they can pass or not, until they physically are inspected once in Spain. Do you have any info regarding the registration process? I am doing all I can to avoid selling but I also can’t and don’t want to stress too much about it, if not possible.
Hello guys, apologies for the absence from the forum. The plan which sees us moving to Spain is still going ahead and in the meantime, i have sold both my 900ss which were younger than 30 years old and therefore unable to be imported to Spain after brexit. I have however purchased an 89 851 and i can't wait to slap this into the Spanish DVLA! Rage apart, i love the bike and at least, i have avoided being depressed by thinking about my two ss. The 851 needs a bit of work and therefore i am spending a good amount of time in the garage lately, which i love. See you guys around
