How Many Owners Is Too Many?

  1. ok so at what point do you get turned off?

    is a 2014 899 thats in otherwise good order but with 7 keepers on the log book a turn off and is that same bike with 2 owners worth much more?
     
  2. Depends on the condition of the thing imo.

    i wouldn’t be too concerned as bikes especially sport bikes often change hands a fair bit.

    i know in the world of pork it can be an issue but folks are more forgiving when it comes to the gt cars
    but then we all know pork owners are t))ssers

    I’m with Advikaz. I always buy on condition. Fancy cars can have 4 owners in their first 18 months. It’s no biggie for me.
    I bought my Vito van pre registered from Mercedes with 10 miles on the clock. So I’m second owner even though I bought it brand new.
     
  5. I agree. I was the seventh owner of my 916 biposto (not the seventh son of a seventh son, though) and it turns out all of the 6 previous keepers were super careful and equally loved that bike. It was pristine when I bought it with 45.000 km and even in a better shape when I sold it 3 years later with 58.000 km.

    I’d say, however, that on a strictly statistical stand point, the more owners the more likely one of them may have been reckless…

  6. Obviously the condition of the bike is the most important criterion when buying but fewer owners help when it comes to selling the bike.

  7. I really don't see how that can be a strictly statistical standpoint at all.

    Service history can be a useful indicator on newer bikes, but its all about the actual condition of the bike right now; 'cause thats the only thing you can check & thats what you're getting for your cash.

Condition of the bike can be deceptive too, my 97' 916bp has fairly scabby wheels and some areas of rust on the frame, its had 3 owners before me but has a pretty comprehensive service history, lowish mileage and starts/rides and runs as it should, apparently many bikes of the period have the same rust and flaking engine paint issues ,not necessarily the fault of the owner...i personally would look at the all round bigger picture and not go on number of owners and state of cosmetics alone.

  10. It never ceases to amaze me how many people want a brand new bike for 5 year old money. You can never be certain of a vehicle’s history unless you buy it brand new… obvs…

    I knew a guy that bought an ex demo from Porsche. 8 months old, first registered owner. Turns out it was an ex Porsche Experience Centre car from Silverstone. Thrashed every day of its short life with about a gazillion launches logged in the ECU.

  11. Well, some things get damaged inside sometimes, and you don’t necessarily see/know about it until a few months in. Based on my own personal experience, I believe that maintenance records alone are not enough to prove a bike has been well cared for. It’s definitely a good start, but usage is also very important. Some people just don’t know how to use a bike or a car on a daily basis. They will wreck even the best serviced motor…

  12. For me you just can't beat being the first owner on the logbook, with eight brand new motorcycles from 93 to 99 that was my busy period, but i'll never do that again as you lose way too much money these days.

  13. Yep, nothing like picking up a brand spanker. But taking a bath in a new car/bike isn’t a modern phenomenon. I seem to remember bath time in the 90’s too. In fact thinking about it, here and now is the best time I can ever remember on used motors.

  14. As the 11th owner of a 2009 1100 Monster, I was a bit worried when I bought her. But after some research into the owner history it seems many sold after a year and very little use. Condition and service history very good save for the beginning of some engine cover paint flakes. So I agree buy on inspection/condition - you might find a 1 owner that’s not been loved or a 10 owner used as a summer toy, garaged and serviced annually and generally pampered. Very happy with mine after 10 previous loving owners.

  16. it's not uncommon for people to buy a sports bike for the summer then sell it when the weather changes so that could be a few of the 7 owners, also Ducatis can be a midlife crisis for some folks and once they scratch the itch they sell it on. For me I think if the condition is good and the servicing has been done and the paper work is all there I wouldn't be to bothered if it was a reasonable price, millage each year would be interesting to see if you can check it on the MOT history. That said theres plenty for sale so you might find a better one, I just purchased a 2011 848 evo with only 2 owners, the second owner who i purchased it from only had it for a year and he did 700 miles on it, the owner before him had it from new total millage 7600..

  19. Very true Ducatis feel agricultural compared to Jap bikes, bit like older Land Rovers you love them of hate them. Personally I love the raw feel of them especially my previous 916..
     
  20. Bought a bmw r1200rt ex demo 3000 miles from bmw total nightmare warranty work front rear shock brake mech gear selector etc prob 5-6000 warranty work
    Mate bought 1299 3000 miles no probs one owner FSH with motorapido
    Bought a ex demo v2 700 miles sweet as pie . As some posts you can’t always tell mileage condition nos of owners all factors without one over riding but where it’s service is a good clue
