Hi all, Has anyone sourced piston ring kits before? If so, how much did you pay for them and from where? I got a quote for two kits (one per cylinder) the other day and almost wept when I saw how much it was (£148 each!!) - Near on £300 for 6 rings! Am I missing something here?? I was prepared for some 'Ducati tax' but this seems a bit extreme?
I had the same problem with 916 rings. They were slightly cheaper than that.It got expensive when I bust the cast Oil control ring and of course you cant buy rings separately. PM me if you want to know how I got around it it may work for you
Got my last set about 18 months ago (900 Monster 2 valve) from German E-bay where they were advertised regularly at about £88 I think.
A pair of JE high-compression pistons (with rings) are about the same price or less than new Ducati rings - you know it makes sense...
Years ago.......and I mean years ago, but not as far back as the bloke with a red flag...... .....there was an engine rebuilding company in Colchester who, if they couldn't find the 'OEM' rings for a piston, always seemed to be able to find an altrnative, but not a pattern part, just rings that happened to fit another engine. 'Bout time someone else started doing it, I reckon. AL
did you look at link AL? - these are excellent value with proper oil rings. Fitted a set myself and have covered around 5K since - tempted to get a spare set myself.
Nicht sprechen sie Deutsch, Kriss, Mein Herr.................Apart from "Achtung, Englander.........Arrrghhh!!"
all you have to do is 'Copy' and 'Paste' any dialogue you want to understand here for example :- Google Translate and Klaus is your Onkel
After a bit of Google translating I'm still a little unsure of whether these will fit '93 900 SS, I haven't looked into it properly as yet - but I believe I require the 'L' shape profile ring? It seems that the company selling the rings in the link offer a service that makes 'the normal straight ring' fit for 29 Euro's per cylinder.
Any help.....?? Fast By Ferracci ® - Ducati, MV Agusta, Husqvarna, Moto Guzzi, Bimota, Vespa, Piaggio and Cagiva - Plus: High performance motorcycle and racing parts No idea what the shipping costs etc are, but the piston kit is about £273.... And there are these....www.mdinaitalia.co.uk - Pistonringset90092gt
Thanks Arquebus, it's a little pricey for what I had wanted to pay, but the kit is now a consideration. Would love to just change out my current rings as everything else is good to go. I messaged the german ebay seller asking him whether the kit would fit a '93 900SS and he has replied in german and even with the google translate page I haven't a clue what it means! Haha. See below the reply and the translated reply: moin wenn nicht schoneinmal die Kolben/Zyl. getauscht wurden zu 98% nicht man kann die Kolben umarbeiten für EUR 30,00 d. St., dann passen sie ansonstebn paßt nur der Ölring viele Grüße moin if not before the piston / cylinder. were changed to 98% non- one can rewrite the pistons for EUR 30,00 d St., then match ansonstebn only fit the oil ring greetings Anyone speak any German?!
Don't take my word for it on the price conversion for the kit.........and check the carriage and import charges......VAT will apply I reckon, plus a Post Office handling fee. Gliddofglood lives in Switzerland, so if he can't translate it, I don't know who else can.....Mrs Arquebus can read and speak German to some extent, but I think this will have her beaten......besides she's at work until late. AL
4.0L Range Rover rings fit a 916 (90mm bore) and only £10 a set as do 1.9L aircooled VW transporter rings
Probably be cheaper to book a short break in a spot near the factory and then go and blag the rings from the factory boss...... .......I have known Guzzi people do it at Mandello del Lario..... AL
Did you sort rings for this bike? the quote below does concern me as the 916 is not a 90mm bore and is not a dykes "L" section ring. if not sorted i may be able to help.
